any special tools or pulling devices? Ive never pulled a wheel and I'm getting ready to change my air bag out to another.

 

2 torx bits benhind the wheel. disconnect the battery for a good 20 minutes to discharge any juice. turn the wheel so the torx are at the bottom and remove them remoive the bag and theres a plug at the back. remove it thats about it

 

Yup, like 32krazy said...easy peasy..take your time and do it calmly. Position the steering wheel perfectly straight before you pop it off so that you can pop it back on straight as well. I think there is a "996 steering wheel removal" video on YouTube in case you want to have a look.

 

Before you undo the big nut that holds on the steering wheel, mark the nut and the column with some nail polish. Then you will know exactly where to re-tighten it to.

 

I have a complete steering column with wheel on it kicking around if you need any pics

FWIW, you don't need to disconnect the battery or airbag CU to do the swap...at your own risk of course...

Yeah, if im not mistaken the video i was referring to on YouTube the person was actually going a bit further than just removing the wheel. I think he was fixing something with the indicators and he messed with the clockspring. I didn't even breathe on the clockspring. Last thing I wanted was to have a disaster on my hands from an easy steering wheel swap!

 

where is this spring and how do you swap wheels without it coming loose? And if it does, what happens?

 

loosen the center nut but don't remove it. then start pulling towards you. After the wheel is loose from the shaft, then fully remove the center nut and slowly remove the wheel.
Sometimes the back portion of the steering wheel gets stuck with the clock spring and the whole thing will come out. I had it happen and it took me an hour to figure out how the clock spring went back in

 

so if I'm changing wheels, wouldn't I need to swap the spring?

 

no. the spring operates the airbag and horn electrical connection. its wound behind the wheel. about 1 minute in is the clockspring
