Try http://www.extremesupply.com/ in Signal Hill. It is the only place I could find that had helmets in stock. Check them on Ebay the price may be lower than what they charge at the store. Cash helps on the price too!!!

I personally like Arai helmets. I have bought quite a few Arai helmets including the GP5W. I think they are really well made and comfortable. I think it is really just personal choice and you should try them on at the local shop to make sure it fits correctly. The guys at Subesports are really helpful and you should give them a visit.
Another option for you would be to order a helmet from a place like "saferacer" dot com. They have an extremely lenient return policy and great selection. I had sent back 4 helmets of various brands, then sizes, before finding the one the fit me the best. If the local brick and mortar stores have the same selection, then obviously that would be your best bet.
When it comes time to get your helmet painted, you may want to talk to Tyler at Censport. He painted my helmet and is currently painting my wife's helmet. He is considered by many to be the best in the industry and is usually booked up months in advance with helmet painting jobs.
Here is a link to a thread that shows pictures of my painted helmet.
