Great install and review. Couple of points: I think the laser detection/shifting is the most important aspect of the detector. As the reviewer pointed out its very important to turn off the shifter immediately after you've been hit (do this simultaneously as you slam the brake). Otherwise when Mr revenue collector re-aims and you jam him again, he may get suspecious and pissed off. I picked up a trooper early one morning, turned off the unit immediately and going only 56 mph the dude pulled me over. He walked up stuck his head inside the car looking around and asked what kind of jamming system I had. I played dumb and pretended I didn't know what he was talking about. He asked me to step out and stated he could not give a speeding ticket but was going to give me a ticket for improper license display (30% of the county decal was covered by the plate frame). Luckily I installed all three shifters up front.

I have two SRXs which I got back when they were 1200 plus install (1800 bucks each). Now that they are 500 bucks I am having a hard time pulling the trigger on the 9500ci. Since u have had both, do u still think the 9500ci is that much better functionally than the SRX. I have been very happy with the SRX.

If you are looking at jammers, the LI is far superior to escort (or anything else for that matter) and I just happen to have a group buy running

Yes. I still have an SRX in my DD, and the 9500ci in my Cayman S, which is far from a garage queen. The 9500ci really is that much better. It trumps the SRX in sensitivity by many multiples, and the GPS filtering is just incredible.

The only thing I miss from the SRX is the remote mute button, but the 9500ci's auto learn makes it a lot less necessary to ever reach for the mute button.

I seriously need to bite the bullet and get another 9500ci or two. They are just really that much better than the SRX.

This is very true. The LI stomp on the Escort in regard to Jamming. Too bad they don't offer anything on the radar side. The ultimate combo would be a 9500ci + the LIs.

Gator, this in incredibly helpful. Thanks for taking the time to educate us. I have been living with an Escort Solo for some time, but just bought a 997 with a K-40 (incl. defuser) already installed. It's a very clean install, but I've read numerous reports of it being a little behind the times now, and am looking at replacing it. Anyway, your write-up is very useful.

No Arrows? not interested.,guess I'll have to wait until the patent on the V1 arrows is ended., until then I'll stick with the V1.

Oops... I realized a few of my picture links were broken. They should be fixed now. Sorry about that.

What kind of update are you looking for? I've been driving with this system for over 3 years now. The shifters have saved me a bunch of times, and have never let me down.

Very well done write up. I ordered one and it's being installed right now. I had a V1 and hated dealing with false alerts and I never had it installed, so it would fall off my windshield. This is a much better product and in fact the guy at the shop (who has a K40 in his car) said V1 has old electronics now compared to the newest K40 and 9500Ci.

Eh, V1, although an old unit, has proven itself numerous times and is still ranked as one of the best radar detectors on the market. Although the V1 design hasn't changed in the last 20 years, Valentine does have updates available such as the newest 3.893 software.

K40 on the other hand, although a decent unit aesthetically, is very unreliable when it comes to both radar detection and laser jamming.

The 9500ci is a great unit all around. There are rumors that Escort has improved the ZR4 shifters as I've seen testing first hand and they have done much better than the results of the Guys of Lidar 2008 test. The radar detection and fact that the unit has GPS make it a great unit all around.

For those that have the 9500ci, we have made special smoked lenses that replace the Escort stamped blue lenses originally on the display. It's a very easy swap and greatly improves the look of the display. Please PM or email me (link in signature) if anyone is interested in a lens.

Nice job Gator Bite.

I have a 2010 997.2 Carrera 2S with a dealer installed (Porsche of Towson) 9500ci. They did a good job but I regretted not reading this post before I gave it to them. I wound up moving the GPS antenna from the rear deck lid (ouch!) to the windshield cowling. I noticed with interest that my cowling has a thin aluminum backing plate underneath on the right side from above the cabin filter to just past the center. I used 3M VHB double sided tape to secure it on the left side above the windshield wiper transmission. ( I also have a Kenwood DNN990HD with another GPS antenna (smaller) and an XM receiver antenna. I placed these on the right side but between the aluminum backing plate and the plastic cowling). My control module is right in front of my right knee and the display module is at the uppermost left corner of the "oddments compartment" (really... that is what Porsche calls it)... out of sight from even the most diligent LEO. Now, if only the 9500ci would automatically lower my rear spoiler!

I had a very new V1 before upgrading and I still had too many false alerts. I think the 9500 is a much better product after using it now for quite some time.

I made the mistake of buying and installing this unit. Overall cost about $2300 with the install. The keypad never really functioned other than mute. Because I own several properties around the country and don't drive this particular vehicle year round I didn't notice. Then my wife wanted me to change the volume and it didn't work. I checked the manual thought I was doing it right-nothing. Took it to the install place(when i had time and was in that city)and they said it wasn't working so I had them pull it out($150) so I could send in the control unit.

Now here comes the real reason you shouldn't deal with Escort. Zero customer service. I have their flagship model and nothing. I sent it in on the 5th overnight, didn't hear until the 12th that they wanted my credit card to charge me $60 for something that never worked in the first place. They said it was out of warranty but I said it never worked and because its not my daily driver nor am I even in that state year round how would I know. Then called on the 23rd for a call back on the status and no call. Then wrote them an email on the 25th-no reply from them. Then called on the 26th and they said it was still on the bench!!! They would call me back-no call. Just replace or fix the damn thing already. Then on the 27th I used their online chat to agent and they said that they were so behind with customer complaints they haven't gotten to mine yet. Oh wait they said I should receive it on the 2nd now…. hmmm oh and they still charged me the $60 but didn't tell me what was wrong, if they fixed or replaced it or anything.

If you ordered food at a restaurant and they took forever to bring it to your table they would comp your meal. Not Escort no no they think its fine to spend now close to $2500 and for you to make all the calls and take your car in for install de install etc…

There are many companies out there save your self the hassle.
