OK, before the jokes about the Yachtmaster and others alike, this is absolutely and positively a genuine Rolex, purchased from one of the most reputable ADs around.
So what happened? My girlfriend has the TT women's and it tapped the table and boom! Cyclopse falls off and the crystal shatters into 4 distinct pieces.
Any ideas? I thought these were pretty much impossible to shatter with everyday wear.
It's warrantied and all is well, but that seriously puzzled me.

Hell when my first submariner was about 6 months old.......I dropped it on the tile floor......the ONE and ONLY time it ever was dropped......shattered the crystal...I am NOT impressed with the strength of the crystals....

Jesus, seriously? I've had my Omega and Breitling for awhile and it's been no issue whatsoever. I've dropped them a few times and it was no issue, I didn't even think about the crystal shattering, more of scratching it.
Sapphire is very very hard (brittle), thus the excellent scratch resistant properties, trade off is it will most probably shatter given enough impact strength. I noticed that the crystal on Rolex protrude outside the bezel, making it more of a target.
I dropped by TT daytona back in the late 90's the DAY I got the watch and had the crystal shatter. Landed exactly face down/crystal down. Looked like fairy dust on the floor :-)

that sucks!
What happened after that? how did you get it replaced/repaired?
Actually, I called Tivols in KC (where I purchased the watch) and they did not have any replacement crystals in stock. Said it would be a few weeks before they could do anything, then they said they'd have to send it in because likely particles got into the movement and it wouldn't be warrantied since I dropped it. I called another Rolex dealer in St. Louis (I lived in Columbia, MO at the time). They said no problem. I took it to them on Saturday A.M., they replaced the crystal and charged me about $150 or something. I purchased 4 more watches from them. Customer service goes a long way.
Just dont drop it. Saphire is very brittle but strong. Thats like everything in life the harder the substance lik concrete the more brittle.
She was working at a desk and rested her wrist on the disk, open palm up, and barely tapped the desk.
I'm not talking about instances where you drop a watch and the crystal cracks. I'm talking about incidental contact. If I took my watch and laid it face down on a table, I wouldn't expect to flip it over and see the crystal cracked/shattered. That is essentially what happened - the cracks originated from the cyclopse, and the cylcopse fell off.
Thats sucks bro. Nice watch to be breaking the crystal. Funny though, I dropped my Fossil work watch off a 3rd story balcony over the summer (accident) and it actually landed on the crystal. It didn't break! It has a couple of scratches on it but I still wear it everyday.

In high school I had a watch from a local jeweler with an ETA movement in it. I got into a scuffle, ended up dragging it all over some pavement. The bezel was ruined, as well as the metalics of the face, but the sapphire crystal looked untouched.
I guess there's just a perfect way to hit the crystal and it shatters without problem. My gf must have hit it on that exact point.
Oh well, glad (but not really glad) to see this isn't an isolated incident.
the older rolexes with the plexiglass crystals dont shatter like this however they scratch easilly. the reason that the omega speedmaster moon watch has a plexiglass is because if by any chance the crystal breaks it ill only be a few pieces as opposed to saphire cracking it will be like a thousand pieces.
as my homies in da ghetto say.. saphire is cracka lackin
