So I'm in the market for an engagement ring and had a question to ask any diamond expert here...
Which would you sacrifice, color or clarity?
Say a diamond with E, VV2 is $X.
Diamond with F, VV1 is also $X.
Which makes a bigger difference on the diamond? Color or clarity?
Also, where are good placed to get engagement rings at good prices? I've checked out www.bluenile.com and they seem to have good prices on GIA cert diamonds.
I'm looking to spend less than $20K and hope to get a diamond that is close to 1.5ct.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

more importantly that color and clarity is the cut of the diamond. This is most important and if you are spending 20K, make sure you have a ideal or excellent cut diamond. If you purchase a GIA certed diamond which should be the only diamond you should buy, you are looking for a triple X, excellent cut, symetry, polish. XXX diamonds hold much better value and are harder to find. They usually carry a premium over the rap sheet.
I see girls with large 3 carat stones that do not shine at all. You can buy a much smaller diamond that will get many more compliments if you have the right cut. Your girl will thank you in the end.
I bought my girl a 1.53 G VS1 GIA cert XXX round diamond under 15K about 1 year ago. I got a pretty good deal but that should be your price point for a nice 1.5 carat.
I was shopping for a stone recently and was looking at D and E color. There is some people (ie. women and their friends) who would look favorably on D and E's. F's and beyond are nice too, but if you had to have a criteria beyond carat size, make it a color of D or E.
The clarity is also important, but I would say first, get the whitest color you can get and then shoot for the highest clarity. IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1 are all excellent clarity.
Internet is a tricky way to go. I echo the sentiments of those who state that you must go with GIA cert.

if you're looking for a round brilliant and you have a budget of just under $20k, you should be able to get a Hearts and Arrows stone...cant get any better than that...a 1.5ct stone with the Hearts and Arrows cut certification should run you in and around the $15k ish price point I think?
I'm not sure how prices have changed since I bought my engagement ring for the finacee a year and a half ago...
