Oris makes a decent watch for the money, like Tag.
In the $2K range i would shot for an Omega before Tag or Oris. If a chrono is what you want, see if you can find a Speedmaster you like. Great watches, bullet proof, great design, hold their resale value pretty well etc.
If the watch does not need to be new, $2K is a good range for pre owned watches.

It does not need to be new, just something good with a reputable brand. I like the Tag Carrera style. How about Bulgari? I've had one, my wife has a Bulgari watch and it's been good for years. I want to have Chrono though.

how interesting, I was recently in the same situation and was looking at the Oris, TAG, Omegas and a few others with the same criteria, automatic watch to be used as a "beater"
I suggest you actually look at the Oris. the pictures look nice but the chronograph buttons look kinda weird on the watch in real person. i ended up getting a TAG Carrera used for about 1300. you can get a new one for 1800-2000. another cool watch is the TAG Aquagraph. it has a rubber and metal bracelet that the end user can change by himself. the only problem is that it doesn't have the date.
the other reason that i chose the TAG is that unfortunately i am a little name brand conscious, and the the TAG was the cheapest watch that i thought i could accept. Oris is a fine name and all but not many people seem to know what it is

Yeah, I'm in the same bolt. Just sold 2 of my Breitlings and just want something else for daily use. Oris is out of the picture now. Going to concentrate on Omega, Tag, Bulgari. I'm watching a Breitling Blackbird edition auction to see if will fit the bill. Trying to avoid Breitling for now, already had 5 of them. Never had a Tag. The Carrera looks classic. I liked the Calibre 36 (i think that was it called).

Big issue with most Oris unit's is they do not have a screw-down crown, so it tends to get pulled/twisted on clothing, cuffs, etc. I say this as a owner of more than one Oris - love 'em.
If your buying to get a good watch, the Omega (automatic, not battery) is probably the best in the list. If you're buying a jewlery watch, there are lots of alternatives.

+1 on the Omega. I have a Seamaster Professional that I use daily and it's been great.

IWC makes nice stuff. The Flieger you picture above is a nice watch. The Ingeneur Chrono is nice as well.
Bulgari are more fashion that great watch. I like the looks of some of their "scuba" watches though.
I just got a new daily wear. I got a limited edition Kobold RE Byrd chrono. I wanted something a little bit different. I have owned too many Breitling's, Omegas and vintage chronos to count. The Kobold has a lot of nice details, was a limited run of 60 watches (not fake limited run of 1000+), is made in the US and is manual wind (which I prefer). List on the watch is $3250, if you ask nice you can by it factory direct for $1975 or pick one up pre-owned in the $1400 range.
