I don't know how these people survive, especially in this economy. Have been shopping for a new watch, and have checked out numerous stores while on vacation in Waikiki.
Timeworks Ben Bridge at the Ala Moana mall; they carry Rolex, Patek, IWC, Panerai, etc, etc. My wife and I walk in and they actually have the model that I want. There is one saleswoman and no other customers, and this woman can't even say hello or give us the time or day.
Rolex store at the Royal Hawaiian shopping center; there are five employees and one saleswoman is waiting on two Japanese tourists...again they have the exact model watch I am interested in buying, and the remaining four employees can't even acknowledge our existence.
Wtf, these people can only give you the time of day if you are a Japanese tourist who is ready to open a suitcase full of cash? I would expect that they would be a little more motivated in this economy, but what do I know.
New resolution...no more watch shopping while on vacation.

Did you go to the Ben Bridge In Ala Moana, I have bought a few rolexes there and my experiences have been great (not the timeworks, just plain Ben Bridge). Not to mention you save a bit on tax as I think its like 4% in hawaii.
Or have us ship it to you and pay no tax out of state.

I had the same problem here in Boston last night at my Rolex AD. I've got my hands on a WG Daytona amongst a few other things with my Sub on the table and I can barely get a hello let alone a price discussion or anything else. Given I was looking for an SS and just wanted to get the feel but still...treat me like a f'ing human being.
Last time I went there it was enjoyable and I ended up ordering my first Rolex a few days later offline, regardless it made me vow to go to them for servicing needs if it arose. Forget that now, the two reps (no customers but us mind you) were more concerned with quizzing each other on watches in stock than helping myself and my fiance'.
I've had the same experiences at many watch shops around the country. I'm just not sure why high end watch retailers (or rather salesmen) have this snobbish attitude. Yes there are lots of "tire kickers" that stroll into watch shops but some of those people are actually buyers asking "why should I buy from you?" Customer service is the difference. I'm involved in high end watch sales (not a retailer) and service is everything. Not kiss ass service but genuine customer service. Yes, the economy sucks and sales are slow, but we sold a Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillion last week for $1.2mil. So buyers are still out there!

Always had a great experience and excellent service at Tourneau. Either online, on the phone or in person...

Ben Bridge Timeworks at Ala Moana was a great experience for me. I bought my ex wifes rolex from there, which I now regret. If you still want to check them out ask for Shigeo. He was really down to earth and helpful. He was one of the few people there that helped me and didn't look at me like I wanted to steal something.
That sucks. I was just in Hawaii in June with my family, and they had great service. I got my watch appraised and everything. I dont quite remember the name of the store, but it was in waikiki between the ferrari store and the bvlgari store. I am korean, maybe they thought I was Japenese at first.
it seems like a lot of salespeople in watch stores are just like salespeople in other professions that were once booming, easy money. they never learned to love the profession, the products they're selling, or how they appear to their clientele. they are motivated by the quick, easy sale. the great, experienced salespeople i've dealt with seem to understand that although i may not buy the first, and sometimes second time, their presentation and treatment are as if i did.
but to look at it from their perspective, they've probably been eaten alive by tirekickers trying to squeeze as much as possible from them without anything in return.
I must say, while in Aruba my watch experience was great. Shops seem very friendly and will show you anything from a $500.00 watch to a $120k watch all while offering you beer or wine while you browse/shop. Would defintely do business again in Aruba. Oh and the prices were very good.

YOU ARE JAPANESE !!!
here's a hint, stutter when you speak and throw in a few words in japanese very so often. you will be surprised how many sales guys in HI start sucking up.
it works for me.

Ha ha, I guess I have to start dressing more like a tourist... I guess I must look like a slob compared to the foreign tourists.
Next time I bust out my Nihongo...took a few years of Japanese in HS and jr. high. However, if it's anything like the golf rates(tourists pay ~3x's more than locals), it's probably not worth the effort.
