George H.W. Bush wasn’t considered the “coolest” president ever, but it was during his administration that the original Dodge Viper roared onto the world stage. The 10-cylinder throwback to simple, brutally powerful sports cars of a bygone era started at $50,700.

Flash forward to earlier this year. The big metal snake wasn’t doing too well. Sales were low. A recent $15,000 price cut turned things around, though. Year-to-date sales are up 26 percent. The 2015 Viper has a base MSRP of $84,995*, which is close to the 1992 car’s adjusted-for-inflation figure of $86,130. It strikes with the fury of a 645-horsepower, 640-pound-foot 8.4-liter V10 and is available in four trim lines:

-2015 SRT, $84,995: Includes features such as polished wheels, Brembo brakes, electronic stability control (ESC), Alcantara interior accents, automatic high-intensity-discharge headlights, LED taillamps, a 7-inch driver information display, an 8.4-inch Uconnect Touch multimedia center, a back-up camera, 3-D navigation with Sirius XM satellite radio, SRT Performance Pages, launch control, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system.

-2015 GT, $94,995: Comes with such niceties as Nappa leather/Alcantara seats, a two-mode sport suspension, five-setting ESC, a GTS hood, two-piece slotted rotors, and red calipers.

-2015.5 TA 2.0 Special Edition, $101,995: Loaded with “a high-performance Aero Package, competition rear spoiler and front lower dive planes for increased downforce and improved handling on the track, two-piece Brembo Rotors, 18/19-inch Matte Black Sidewinder Wheels, Pirelli P Zero Corsa Tires, dual-mode suspension, [and] five-mode ESC.” Dodge also adds a front splitter, an aero wing assembly kit, Brembo brakes with performance pads, and a carbon fiber X-brace under the hood.

-2015.5 GTS, $107,995: Packed with goodies, including Laguna leather seats; an Alcantara headliner; a Harman Kardon 18-speaker sound system; Nappa leather on the instrument panel, console, and doors; and 18/19-inch polished aluminum Venom wheels. The GTS Ceramic Blue Special Edition is adorned with – surprise, surprise – Ceramic Blue paint, black stripes, and orange calipers.

Although production of the 2015 models began in Detroit last month, those cars won’t hit dealerships until the first quarter of next year. We’ve got to wait at least another month for these beasts to hit the streets?! Talk about not cool…

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
