2021 Formula 1

Along with the new generation of cars is new regulations. These plan to completely change the dynamic of the sport and create better racing.

This is the moment the motorsport world has been waiting for. In the coming days of the U.S. Grand Prix over in Austin, Texas, at Circuit of the Americas, Formula 1 has come together with the FIA to finally release the official first-look of the upcoming 2021 Formula 1 car. Along with it will come a host of new regulations, all aimed at making the sport and racing the best it can be.

The big plans for the upcoming 2021 season are now revealed and it seems that the sport will be receiving a major overhaul for the best of both the teams and the fans. Since the start of the Turbo V6 Hybrid era, not a single team has been able to bring a stop to the dominance of Mercedes, as the team has won six consecutive Constructor’s Championships and Driver’s Championships. That hardly seems like a competitive sport does it? Especially considering there are teams with a fraction of the budget of Mercedes who are expected to compete for grid positions simultaneously. Well, all that is being put to a halt to yet again bring some lifeblood and excitement into the world’s highest level of motorsport. Thanks to an article by F1, we learn more details.

Firstly, let’s talk about the changes to the cars themselves. It is known that the over complexity of the aerodynamics has disabled cars from being able to produce close racing due to what is known as “dirty air”. Thus, the aerodynamics have been simplified to allow for racing and only a 10% reduction of downforce to the following car than the 50% of the current generation. Not to mention, the new cars look sexier than ever, another win.

From the sporting side, there is now going to be a cost cap on teams: $175 million per year for any performance-related spending. This means that Ferrari will not be able to spend $500 million a year developing their car when Haas does not have the infrastructure to do so and can only spend a fraction of this amount. Every one will theoretically be on an even playing field financially.

In our opinion, these changes will be shaping the sport for the better and we hope to see more than the same familiar faces on the podiums in a couple of years. I love to see teams do well, but every now and then somebody else has to win. When the teams are truly even, driver skill should be the driving variable in racing. That’s what we want and hope to see.
