Porsche, like many other manufacturers, are doing away with old naming schemes as the company revamps its lineup. The first names to fall under this new naming convention will be the upcoming Cayman and Boxster. For the next generation, the new cars will be called the 718 Cayman and the 718 Boxster, with Porsche reviving one of its historical nameplates.

In the press release, Porsche stated, “Whether it was at the 12-horu race in Sebring in 1960 or the European Hill Climb Championship which ran between 1958 and 1961, the Porsche 718 prevailed against numerous competitors with its powerful and efficient flat-four cylinder engine.” Now that last part is majorly important since the name isn’t the only thing being changed on the upcoming sportscars.

According to Porsche, the next generation of cars will make use of a flat-four cylinder engine, similar to the one found in Subaru’s WRX STI. Displacement is somewhere between 2.0-2.5-liters and the top spec Boxster will feature around 400 horsepower. The two cars will likely debut in the next few months as both are scheduled to go on sale later next year.
