All-Motor Nissan 350Z VQ Stroker Engine Cracks 600 Horsepower

By -

Calling this 4.2L 350Z stroker motor savage, would be something of a gross understatement.

Love it or hate it, the VQ engine from Nissan has been a popular and undeniable force in the tuning world. Powering the 350Z, 370Z, G35, G37 and just about a dozen other Nissan vehicles, it has had a long and healthy life in the automotive industry. With this, it has been modified up and down by enthusiasts around the world, thus, to find a truly unique VQ-based build, one has to search far and wide. However, don’t worry, we have done that work for you. This is the OnPoint Dyno‘s Z33 time-attack race car and it features a truly unique all-motor 350z based VQ35HR built by Jim Wolf Technologies. This video is from the track day wizards at Speed Academy, and, boy, is it filled with juicy details.

For those that don’t speak Nissan, the “HR” variant of the VQ engine family is essentially the high-performance version, featuring upgraded internals, more power and a higher redline to start. However, this motor is so much more than that, its not even funny. This VQ now has 4.2L of displacement with a 15:1 compression ratio, which is almost a full liter more of displacement over the stock motor and 4 points more of compression. Yeah, this thing is no joke. Their goal with this motor is nothing but world-record breaking power.

In the growing fashion of turbocharged, small displacement motors, this VQ really stands out. But its necessary to have a little back story on the car and motor itself. This same car previously featured a similar big-power NA VQ, revving to an outrageous 9,000 RPM. However, it didn’t necessarily meet their horsepower expectations, making somewhere around 400-420 WHP. Later in the track season, the motor, sadly, shot most of its internals out onto the track after a couple sessions, prematurely ending its violent-sounding life. With this, OnPoint Dyno decided to go big or go home and start a fresh build on a new bespoke VQ.

This new VQ is all one-off, a custom 4.2 crank, custom rods and pistons, bespoke dry-sump oiling, custom ported heads, custom ITB’s, custom camshafts, you name it. You hope all that time and money better pay its dividends when it comes to power, and it sure does. Our friends at Speed Academy show that this thing is absolutely insane, making 537 WHP and 361 WTQ at around a redline of 8,200 RPM. That’s just the break-in. This bad boy is going to be spinning at nine grand once it’s fully dialed in.

The HP/L ratio of this VQ power is up there with engines from professional racing teams and this is supposedly only the start, with the team at OnPoint Dyno hoping to make this new VQ hybrid-powered. We thought they were crazy up in Canada, but this confirms it without a doubt. If you’d like to see the team take this motor out for its first hot laps on track, check out this video. Once you hear how unique and aggressive this engine sounds at well over 8,000 RPM, you won’t regret it.
