Electrification Takes Mercedes-AMG’s Flagship Cabriolet Next Level

Mercedes-AMG has unleashed another monster. AMG’s fifth plug-in hybrid, the new flagship SL 63 S E Performance brings electrification to the most powerful drop-top grand tourer SL yet. It will be among the fastest convertibles on the planet when it lands next year.

Powered by AMG’s familiar 4-liter biturbo V8 that produces 600 HP on its own, Affalterbach adds a 200 HP electric motor to the rear axle to deliver a mammoth combined 804 HP and a jaw-dropping 1,047 lb.-ft of twist.

The car starts under electric power complemented by a synthetic V8 noise. Four levels of energy regeneration allow more than 100kW of power to be fed back into the 400V lightweight, high-performance battery with improved cooling. SL 63 S E Performance can travel eight miles on electricity.

The car also has rear-axle steering, a mechanical limited-slip rear differential. Plus, eight driving modes including Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Smoothness, Sport, Sport Plus, Race and Individual. Each adapts throttle response, gearchange ferocity, steering weight, sound, and chassis damping. Bespoke carbon-ceramic brakes are clamped by bronze calipers.
