Audi R8 Smashes 1/2 Mile Record and Rear Window at 250 MPH
In between a slew of twin-turbo Lamborghinis, one Audi sets a new world record before losing some glass.
These days, 1/2 mile racing is one of the fastest growing events in the motorsports world. And it’s easy to see why. Cutting off a supercar after just 1/8 or 1/4 mile means that you’re just beginning to explore its limits, for starters. And launching full effort from a dig is also incredibly hard on a car’s drivetrain. But with 1/2 mile racing, you can bring along your 3,500 horsepower Lamborghini or souped up Audi R8 and achieve ludicrous speed, as we see in this awesome video from That Racing Channel.
The action kicks off with a pair of twin-turbo Lamborghini Huracans built by Underground Racing, ripping up the tarmac at ShiftSector Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The yellow Lambo is up first and records a very impressive speed of 257.58 miles per hour. But UGR also brought along their incredible Audi R8, which records a speed of 229.24 mph on its very first pass.
Obviously, the folks at UGR weren’t quite satisfied with that result. So they turned things up a few notches for the next run. And the Audi responded like an uncaged animal, blowing out its rear window at around 220 miles per hour. It’s truly an amazing sight, what with the massive engine breathing in and out on the glass until it just can’t take anymore.

That epic failure didn’t dampen the mood for UPR or its Audi, however. The car also left this event with a 1/2 mile world record in hand after running a dead even 250.00 mph pass. Truly an incredible effort, and a massive improvement of over 20 mph on its very first qualifying run. Who says the R8 is nothing more than a slower, tamed-down Lambo?
Certainly not us after viewing this impressive outing. But we have to think that these sorts of crazy speeds are just the beginning of what’s possible in 1/2 mile racing. Given the youth of this sport, we have to believe that the best is certainly yet to come.
