YouTuber Tests Efficacy of DIY Ceramic Coating on His Ferrari

By -

DIY ceramic coating products represent the next step of high-end car care being brought down to a user friendly level.

Few things have gained popularity so quickly in the car care world like ceramic coating. These products can be applied to just about any part of a vehicle, whether it’s the paint, glass, wheels, or even plastic trim pieces, and offer superior levels of protection than a conventional wax ever could. Some of these products even claim to offer superior depth and gloss for the paintwork. However, are they legit?

Well, YouTube personality Dan Hurlbert, as known as the Normal Supercar Guy, tried one of these ceramic coating products, by Avalon King, on his own car to find out. While Hurlbert has several sweet rides, this experiment is being performed on his Ferrari 360.

In the video, we see Hurlbert, and a friend trying one of the Avalon King Armor Shield IX DIY kits. The process seems straightforward enough, with the F360 receiving a wash, claybar and mild polishing prior to application. From there, the duo is seen, through a timelapse, applying the product via applicator sponge. It seems as simple as wipe on and wipe off, though, as Hurlbert notes, you don’t want to handle these stuff with bare hands, as it can be sticky. Also, the timing seems to be rather important, you don’t want to let the product sit for too long without buffing into and out of the paint work.

The end result is quite nice. While Hurlbert’s Ferrari was obviously in good shape prior to the product, there does seem to be a bit more gloss in the paintwork. Additionally, he notes, the paintwork is now very hygroscopic, i.e., water runs right off of it. Also, no longer having to wax or polish the car for at least a year sounds worth it to us.

If you’re interested in trying a DIY ceramic coating product on your own ride, here is the kit referenced. For $69.99 and a few hours of time, the results seem great, and we look forward to seeing more.
