Oh, Volkswagen. You’re in a lot of trouble now.

The admission that VW “deliberately circumvented” U.S. testing regimes is rippling like a bombshell throughout the automotive community. It’s a huge deal, especially considering the strength behind Volkswagen’s marketing blitzkrieg promoting the benefits of the diesel throughout the 2010s. It’s surely a tempestuous day at Germany’s largest automotive manufacturer, and the boardroom probably sounds a little like this:

But don’t worry VW, it’ll be okay! Besides, Hitler is right. TDIs are really fun to drive. And it won’t be the end of decency even if they are detuned a bit. They’re still diesels, it’s not like they’ve been accidentally installing Wankel rotaries.

The recall extends to all TDI, 2.0-liters built from 2009 to 2015. Apparently, the engines would sense when they were being smogged and lower their fuel flow accordingly for lower emissions. The fuel flow is restored—along with the pollution—when the car hits the road.

Roughly 480,000 cars are effected. Lets hope the fix doesn’t neuter the TDI line’s fun factor.
