Holy Grail Porsche Will Go for Big Bucks
What would you consider a holy grail car? An Enzo? Maybe a 1966 Maserati? How about Fangio’s original Silver Arrow? Most likely you will say all of the above, and I’d usually be inclined to agree with you. However, this gnarly thing of beauty is going up for sale in a few weeks, and this is about as Holy Grail as it comes.
Meet the 1969 Porsche 917K Gulf Oil racecar. It is chassis number 004, and the first 917K to finish an entire race. The restoration was done by Bruce Canepa, and is the most gorgeous thing, outside my wife, that I’ve ever laid eyes on.
I don’t know what it is about these 917Ks that gets everyone’s blood boiling, perhaps it’s the sheer beauty? The amazing Blue and Orange of the Gulf Livery? Or perhaps it is the need for balls of steel to actually pilot one of these cars around a race track at full speed? Whatever it is, these cars, and indeed this car is a work of kinetic art.
The last one of these to go up for sale hammered down a cool $20 Million, now the website it’s listed at doesn’t have an asking price, but this one has a better history and is better restored than that last car, so it has been rumored that this specific car might go for quite a bit more.
There’s a whole host of other interesting tidbits at the site that I won’t get into here, I just had to share this wonderful machine with you all. God it’s gorgeous.
