Lamborghini Might Build a RWD Huracán

I’m going to preface this post with, I have not driven a Lamborghini. But I do feel like they have lost some of the company’s luster since going over to Audi, and going strictly AWD. There’s less pantomime, less leary, less “OH MY GOD I’M GOING TO DIE” in Lamborghini anymore.

It just doesn’t feel like the Lamborghini that made those that drove them badasses. That is to say, I will drive one if someone gives me the chance, but it just doesn’t feel like the company is Lamborghini anymore. It feels like Audi.

There’s good reason for that, because VW owns Audi and Lamborghini. But in this new safer Lamborghini, there are little streaks of that old Italian flair that peaks through the very stout German way of doing things.

You have the SV line, and all the one offs for the company’s birthday last year. The Veneo, the Egoista, the Sesto Elemento. All of the same mind of the Lamborghini of old. And my personal favorite, the Balboni.

Named for Lamborghini’s most famous test driver, the car had a gated manual transmission and only RWD. And a stripe! It was a perfect car. It was a perfect Lamborghini. One day I hope to drive it.

But it may not be the only special edition Lamborghini to offer the RWD platform according to the boss, Stephan Winkelmann. Speaking to Autocar at Pebble Beach last week, Winkelman said, “We did it with the Gallardo so it might be an option. We are a four-wheel-drive super-sports car [manufacturer] but why should we not do a rear-drive option?”

Hopefully this means there will be a new Huracán special edition RWD only, which would mean that Lamborghini hasn’t lost its essential ridiculousness. The company needs cars like this, it may not sell well, but in order to keep that quintessential hyper crazy that Lamborghini is famous for, they need it.
