Long Tail McLaren P1 GT by Lanzante Struts its Stuff
Lanzante dropped jaws at the Goodwood Festival of speed with their long tail variant of the McLaren P1 GTR.
As a tribute to McLaren’s F1 GTR “Longtail” race car it doesn’t get much better than this captivating build by British motorsport and restoration company Lanzante Limited. Founded by Paul Lanzante in the 1970s, Lanzante Motorsport has a deep connection with McLaren and won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans for McLaren Automotive using an F1 GTR. Lanzante also have some history with Goodwood, and at the 2016 Festival of Speed they set the fastest time for a road car up the Goodwood hillclimb with their prototype P1 LM.
Autocar reports that the long tail P1 GT was commissioned by a wealthy customer from the Middle East and is inspired by the 1997 F1 GT Longtail that McLaren only built 3 examples of. The car we see hammering through the hillclimb event via Goodwood’s YouTube channel has the tail lengthened as part of a new aerodynamics package that also includes the huge fixed rear wing. It also looks to have an even larger splitter than the standard P1 GTR, and a slightly different lower diffuser at the rear.
The standard hybrid assisted 3.8-liter biturbo V8 pushes 986 horsepower through the tires, but Lanzante hasn’t mentioned whether it’s upgraded the drivetrain to take it over 1000 horsepower. We also don’t know if they worked on shedding weight either by using the same Inconel exhaust components from the P1 LM.
Whatever they’ve done under the bodywork and aero, its brutal grace is breathtaking as it eats up the Goodwood hillclimb to catch a Lexus LC500. People we’ve spoken to have said that the deep, resonant, roar of the engine as the Lanzante long tail went buy was a highlight of a day that consisted of a procession of other amazing cars going by. We don’t doubt that.
