Matt Farah Takes The New 718 On A One Take Drive

The new 718 Cayman may have lost two cylinders, but does that make it any less “Porsche” than its predecessors? To start, the new Cayman is now priced less than the Boxster, but still available in standard and “S” models. The $87,000 Cayman S is what Matt is driving in this video, which has a lot of optional performance equipment, including the large 330mm steel rotors that you’d normally find on a Carrera. Carbon ceramic brakes are an option, but with a car this light and nimble, Matt doesn’t feel you’d lose out on too much.

So finally on to that engine. Going to a turbo four cylinder is a departure from the traditional flat-six howl that has become Porsche’s trademark. Performance has increased though. In the Cayman S, the horsepower is now upgraded to 350, with torque at 310 lb/ft. The “music” may be gone, but there’s a big amount of low-end torque to play with that was never there on the six-cylinder. Peak torque happens at 1900 rpm, and surprisingly, doesn’t drop off too sharply when you get close to the 7500 rpm redline. It’ll take some time to get used to the new noise, but in every measurable way, it’s better than ever.
