McLaren’s New Senna Is a Track Master Extraordinaire

By -

Leaner, meaner, and more powerful, the McLaren Senna is hypercar re-defined.

Some people in life are truly lucky. They are the folks that have enough wealth stashed away that the eye-watering price of a McLaren Senna is no issue. Next on the list of lucky people are the ones who are permitted to drive it on track, even if it is a bit out of budget. Matt Prior from Autocar is one of those lucky drivers, and we get to strap in to the passenger seat for a few laps around Silverstone.

Of all the things McLaren can tout about the Senna, it would be all of the stats. Prior points out that aerodynamics are key for the Senna, noting “at 150 miles per hour, the car is producing 800kg of downforce.” That aggressive movement of air has made the McLaren a bit polarizing in looks, but when it’s that fast, the looks become secondary.

Out on track, one of the takeaways from Prior is how the aerodynamics play such a role in how it drives. “It’s quite physical but it does feel McLaren-ish. It’s got a familiar engine note, but the speed is like you will not have experienced in any other McLaren.” In fact, he also calls it rewarding to drive, which is in stark contrast with how most had viewed the P1.

Considering how the Senna so quickly came about just after we’d lapped up the P1 is a bit astonishing. But that’s the speed by which the industry is moving. It’s also quite interesting to see McLaren decide on an all-new car, rather than evolving the P1 any further.

Since every Senna made has been sold, we can only imagine that the mad scientists in Woking, England are already hard at work on the very next hypercar. But where do hypercars go from here?
