OpenAI Head Sues McLaren Over Monstrous Mansion Party Fines

An OpenAI executive and her husband are suing McLaren over mansion party fines.

OpenAI boss Fidji Simo and her husband are suing McLaren over a $762K fine.

The OpenAI chief executive officer of applications, Fidji Simo, has a bone to pick with legendary supercar maker McLaren. Not over a defective car, mind you. No, this bad blood is over a $762,000 fine that Simo and her husband insist is the British marque’s fault.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, McLaren Automotive hosted a weeklong shindig at the OpenAI executive’s mansion. The automaker intended for the festivities to coincide with Monterey Car Week in August. But there was a catch. To host the event without fail at the $5 million mansion in Carmel Valley, California, McLaren had to secure permits.

Therein lies the issue. The county in California dropped a $762,000 fine on Simo and her husband for the celebration, stating that McLaren and promotional agency BMF Media had failed to secure the permits.

The lawsuit alleges that McLaren ‘intentionally concealed’ details

Needless to say, Simo and her husband were less-than-thrilled. The OpenAI executive sued McLaren and BMF Media, claiming that the automaker and the promotional agency “intentionally concealed” that county officials had made an appearance at the nine-acre property during the festivities.

According to the lawsuit, county staff issued a citation and a $505,000 fine, but BMF Media reportedly resolved the issue. A month after the first citation, the county officials bumped the fine up to $761,975, citing that county regulations require residents to pay another fine before they can contest the initial fine.

The OpenAI executive and her husband reluctantly paid the fine and turned their attention to McLaren. It’s not just the alleged concealment, either. The lawsuit states that the “plaintiffs have also suffered damages arising from the annoyance, distress, and mental anguish caused by Defendants’ violation of the limits of Plaintiffs’ conditional consent to use the Property.”

On Thursday, the lawsuit moved up to federal court. The nine allegations against McLaren and BMF Media include claims of fraud. All in all, the tech exec wants restitution, damages, and legal fees from the UAE-owned automaker and the media agency.
