Porsche Celebrates 50 Years of the 911 Carrera

50 years.

That’s how long it’s been since Porsche put their very first 911 on the road. The coupe was initially a quirky oddity in the sports car world. It was shaped kinda funny, for one. Also it had it’s engine in a weird place. But over the years, Porsche molded the 911 Carrera into an icon. Not just for their brand, but for the entire sports car world. Today, the Carrera is the quintessential sports car. It’s the benchmark. Reviews in magazines confirm this fact on what seems like a yearly basis. Even though Porshce has expanded it’s line up beyond the 911 into other sports cars and suvs and what have you, they wouldn’t have been able to get here without the 911.

So three cheers for Porsche, the 911, and 50 years of building amazing sports cars. They’ve evolved their awkward coupe into what most people consider as the last word when it comes to sports cars. Here’s to another 50.
