Porsche Celebrates 70th Birthday at Goodwood

Big names and fans from around the world to celebrate Porsche at the 25th Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Think of the perfect birthday party. Lots of presents? The most amazing cake? No scary clowns? Those are all good, but the best thing of all is having all of your friends and family come out to celebrate everything awesome about you on your special day.

That’s more or less what happened with Porsche at the 2018 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England. This year marks the automaker’s 70th birthday, and just happened to be the silver anniversary of the famed festival at the Goodwood Estate.

As British Olympian Sir Chris Hoy put it, “everywhere you look, there’s a Porsche. And not just, you know, looking backwards toward the past, but looking forwards to the future, as well.” From the 1953 356 Pre-A Coupe to the Concept Study Mission E, any Porsche fans at Goodwood were hoping to see, did.

And that includes Porsche’s motorsport history, from the 917s of the 1970s, the 956 and 962 twins of the 1980s, to today’s 919 tribute and 911 GT3 cars. Per Porsche GT Team driver Neel Jani, events like Goodwood allows one and all the chance to learn a lot “about the past and about the future,” that any given car exists now because of what came before.

Even if you’re not a Porsche fan, this wonderful celebration of everything Stuttgart’s made for seven decades should touch a few heartstrings, especially in the “unique atmosphere” of Goodwood, according to motorsport legend Derek Bell. “[The fans] are so lucky to be part of that,” Bell said, “and of course, Porsche is majorly a part of that, as well.” And we’re lucky to have Porsche in our motoring lives. May they enjoy another 70 years of being awesome.
