Ryan Symancek has been a long-time remote correspondent for the /DRIVE channel, covering his view on the world of rally. While, usually, that means his locales of choice are covered in dirt, or grass, occasionally there’s a break from the muddy Subarus, and today is one of those days. In this episode of My Life as a Rallyist, Ryan follows a team competing in the Targa New Zealand in a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car.

Targa New Zealand is a paved (as paved as roads can be in New Zealand) road rally that let’s brave souls open up their exotic sports and race cars on some of the most beautiful roads in the country.  The cars in attendance are just as breath-taking as the targa itself, so the GT3 Cup fit right in. Large scale road races like this can be daunting for both car and driver, and in this film we get the perspective of the driver, navigator and support team following the race. Fighting mechanical maladies and overcoming the targa is one hell of a challenge.

He obtained a bachelor's degree in Political Science at the Ohio State University in 2013, then pivoted from covering politics and policy to writing about his automotive adventures, something that, he says, is a lot more fun. Since that time, he has established connections with most of the world's major automakers, as well as other key brands in the automotive industry.

He enjoys track days, drifting, and autocross, at least, when his cars are running right, which is uncommon.
