Take the Black: Meet the SLS AMG Black Series

Mercedes and AMG have taken their covers off their ultimate sports car after months and months of testing. We’ve seen this thing on the ‘ring several times before now, but now we know what the SLS AMG Black series finally has under it’s glittering white sheet metal.

Basically, this is SLS AMG GT on steroids. Everything about it is bigger and more exaggerated. The fender vents are now carbon clad and cavernous in contrast to the SLS AMG’s more demure openings. That should give you an idea of how AMG and MB approached this. They didn’t want it to be a Grand Tourer like the normal version. Instead, this is a car that’s meant to be driven on a track hunting down the likes of Porsche and Ferrari. If you have any doubts, just look at all of the exposed carbon fiber. Nothing says “I’m a race car!” quite like carbon fiber and a 8,000 rpm redline.

It’s not just looks though. They’ve retained the 6.2L V8 that AMG is so fond of. In the Black series, they’ve managed to massage an extra 40hp from it, bringing it to 622 hp. So yes. It’ll be fast. It’ll also be 154 lbs lighter than the normal SLS.  It’ll still weigh about 3400 lbs, but hey, it’s a Mercedes. For them it’s basically a featherweight.
