The McLaren P1: World’s Fastest Production Car Around the Nürburgring – Maybe
McLaren has just announced its P1 hypercar has achieved a Nürburgring lap time of less than seven minutes. How much less than seven minutes, you ask? McLaren’s not saying. They’re not even saying whether they beat the Porsche 918’s 6:57.
I know, those damn mother-effers!
But a Facebook quote posted at BridgetoGantry.com could alleviate some of the abstruseness.
“There’s a McLaren dealer going in across from our Porsche dealership. In talking with those guys they said they contacted the manufacturer about the ring time as they have sold some P1’s and the customers want to know. McLaren told them the P1 ran a 6:47 on street tires and a 6:33 on slicks. The only reason there [sic] holding back on releasing the time is because there [sic] waiting for Ferrari to release the LaFerrari’s time first so Ferrari doesn’t use their time as a benchmark and try and go beat it.”
When I read that, voice #13 of the 17 deranged voices in my head said, “Those times feel pretty true to me.” I replied, “I feel the same way, Voice 13”.
Like me and Voice 13, do you also feel the 6:47 street-tire lap time is connected to the truth? I want to believe it is, but mainly to mask the pain of not having a confirmed Nürburgring time straight from McLaren’s tightly wired jaw.
If it’s any consolation, McLaren’s video of the P1 ripping up the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes is pretty magical… Like losing-your-virginity-to-a-supermodel magical.
