Seven Hundred Percent Godzilla Escalation in Ten Years!

That led to a run on R34s with prices mushrooming 30 to 40 percent through the following year, headed all the way by the limited-edition cars. V-Spec 2 Nür values had surged to $200,000 by 2017 with run of the mill cars up to double their 2010 values. But a 10-mile old Nur more recently topped $320,000! While some billed it as a one off, that ten-mile car soon however shoved the value of Nür editions to an average of around $200,000.

This collectability is down to two aspects. One, and likely the lesser of the two, is the surging interest in ‘90s Japanese ‘JDM’ supercars. But the bigger driver is the fact that the Skyline GT-R was only ever sold new in Japan. Which has made US collectors and fans hungry for something that they quite simply canno and Skyline GT-R was soon christened Godzilla t have.

But now with the 25-year mark fast approaching, US GT-R connoisseurs have begun acquiring and storing Skyline GT-Rs in anticipation of that magic day when the cars can be imported as classic cars.

People Always Want What They Cannot Have

So, by the time 2020 came along, the average Skyline GT-R fetched $70,000 and that value just kept on climbing through lockdown. Today you can expect to pay $200,000 for a regular Nissan Skyline GT-R, with a Nür edition fetching S360,000 on auction late last year. That’s a seven hundred percent appreciation in just ten years! And that’s before any of those ultra-special Z-Tune editions have even hit the market. Never mind that that Skyline GT-R’s 25-year probation finally lifts in three years’ time.

“By when you can rest assured that like so many ultra-collectable cars, Godzilla will be well beyond the realm of the average car fan’s pocket,” Wong concludes. “Who knows how much they will be worth by then?” All of which goes to show, if you want to make something really special, build a special car.

And then make sure you can’t buy it in the US for the next 25 years!
