1985.5 944 with 60000 miles from original owner

I have known the owner of this car for a long time. I trust that what he tells me is true, but I don't know a lot about 944's so I was hoping some of you could give the "go / no go" on this car.
He is the original owner.
The car has around 60 k miles on it.
It's red w black leather.
5 speed manual.

It was hit in a parking lot when it was close to new but the damage was fixed correctly and looks good still.
The car doesn't run... He thinks it's the fuel pump.

I would kinda like to own this car because I know the original owner, but he's asking $5000 for it and I really don't know what it will take to fix it.

I want to buy it for a fun car for my wife to drive that gets good mileage and that won't cost a lot to maintain.
I'm considering towing the car to my independent mechanic to get a good diagnosis, but I know the cost for him to check it out will be my bill. (The owner just isn't that motivated to sell).

Am I coo coo for cocoa puffs for considering this car?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
Dan

550Rick is on a distinguished road
a prepurchase inspection is always a good idea and you can expect to cover the cost....chances are there are more things that will need attention and you'll want to know how many and how expensive...

Theres' nothing hard to work on with these cars. The only concern I would have is when the timing belt was last done. IF it's older and snaps, it can wipe the head, bending valves. Mine did it on the race car and cost me $4K. If you can, get a ppi, even for a $5K car, or atleast have a look at his receipts/records.
