Just poking around

My wife says it's out of the question to get a 928 since we have a 996 TT already, but I can't get this childhood dream car out of my thoughts since seeing one up in Marin.

Seems now is a good time to get a 928 with the economy down. Are prices depressed? What would represent a good value? Are there some years/versions that are lower maintenance than others? Is it possible to get into a base model relatively cheaply?

Thanks in advance!

Yes but be careful, do your homework, the parts can get expensive. I had that problem a few years ago on my 951.

David,

Thanks. I found an active 928 group over on Rennlist. It does seem that these are going for cheap. If I were to buy an enthusiast's car, it sounds like it would be a good deal, but I would still have 1-2k/yr. in maintenance.

I did get to ride in one recently, and it's very plush ride in comparison to a 996TT, although the interior is obviously dated.

If I could sell my 996, I would probably buy a well-sorted 928.

Early.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 993 that I love but I always want for a 928.
I am always looking and have come close to pulling the trigger a couple of times.
If you are like me, you are going to do it, its just a matter of when. Good Luck!

You should pick one up as an addition to your 996 tt, because they are totally different cars. My 928 gets 100x the looks that any of my 996's have got and it stirs up all kinds of conversations at the gas pump from guys that had a picture on their wall as a kid or knew someone that bought one new. The cars just feel really special and hand made compared to all of the newer stuff from Porsche.
I have had my 1980 5 spd for about 7 years now and it has been very reliable in the 20,000 miles that I have driven it, and it has never left me stranded.

.

Totally agree!

I have 3 P-cars and the 928 by far draws the most attention and conversation.

I would agree with Macarbon, the 928 is one car in my collection which gets more interest than any of the newer hardware.

I picked a 928 S2, in particular an 86 model.. My reasoning was that it has the retro looks, the S4 brakes and suspension, without the overly problematic version of the LH-Brain with the tile circuit board issue... not to mention other electrical gremlins (digital dash, PSD Pump, tyre pressure monitoring etc)

Awesome car, I would recommend one
