Whats the main difference btw the 928s4 vs 928

please help me out, in regards to the best years, and the drive.I'm looking to buy one, and i need help with the price. I see alot of automatic, is that a good thing for this particular model, or am i just running into alot of automatic?. Very seldom do i find a stick. also how is the gas on this v8, is it a gas drinking?
thanks for the feedback if you have any.....

s4 much more desireable.
manuals account fot about 10% use supply, also more desireable. In my opinion, manual is way more involved.

I get 15-18mpg.

Make sure you get a thorough inpsection by porsche mechanic before purchase. Dealyed maintenance can cost more than the car.

rvhpno80,

The 928 can be the generic designation, or the MY 78-82, then came the
928S from 83-86, S4 from 87-91, and GTS from 93-95 (these are US models).
The 89-91 GT was a version of the S4 with hotter cams and 5-speed.

See http://928.jorj7.com/factable.html for more details.

As for auto to 5-speed, the 5-speed had less made, usually quicker, and
harder to find in good condition. The auto is still a very good option for
this car, since it's mainly a Grand Touring Car, designed for high speed
cruising. I have an auto because it can handle more power then the
5-speed, and in Open Road Racing we don't do much shifting, just stay in
top gear from 140-200+ mph for 90 to 100 miles of Nevada highway.

If I was searching for a 928 I would get an 86 1/2 with the 4 valve engine and the pre S4 body. I personally much prefer the original lines of the early cars.

One of the reasons I bought my S4 was because I thought the rear spoiler just perfected the look of the car. I was very disappointed in the automatic though and really wished that I had held out on my search and got a manual. Even with a chip that was supposed to raise the shift points it still wanted to shift way to early.

Do not compromise. Unless you're supercharged, get a 5 speed. You won't regret it. The supercharger will offset the "sigh, I have an auto" feeling. I wouldn't trade my '87 for anything. it's the supercar the (ad
vanced) home mechanic can keep running. I hate the spin that "it's a GT"so it deserves an auto, especially when a brandy new bmw m3 weighs more than my '87. It's no 2000lb 914 or an elise, but with a restomod suspension setup you can give modern cars a run for their money. It's a fun, relatively rare, capable platform. I'd say insist on records, but they aren't worth **** once you get the car home. Ppi is worth more than records! Unless it was owned by a 928 enthusiast, who's usually a nutter or made of cash anyway, it will need 20 years of updates and a timing belt job.

That said there are some rare deals to be had. VA and MD also has a rather large and knowledgeable 928 base who've been known to hope in and drive for a couple hours just to lend a hand in trade for some food and beer.

I had the 83 S model, loved the rumble sound of engine, seat actually vibrated slightly at idle felt great, neighbors could hear me coming. Test drove S4, when they switched to 4 valves per cylinder, engine got a lot smoother but quieter as well. I left my 928 stock, when driving automatic, shift lever to second, when taking off let the car start to roll without pressing gas, then once you start to roll, nail it, that was the only way I could get it into 1st gear take off, huge difference. GL

I'm still surprised at how few stick cars were built.

You want a stick, with LSD, and sport seats.
Fraggle is right, new suspension and a full going through and you have a hell of a machine on your hands. The wrenching is much better than you would think; the build quality was top notch.
