Zone 1 NY Metro - 48 Hours of Watkins Glen, May 20-22
Hey all,
My first HPDE will be at the 48 hours of Watkins Glen in May. I have a few questions, since I've never participated before, and I'm also curious to see who else from 6speed is going.
I've got a modded '14 TTS with about 10k on the odometer that I purchased in September with 5k on the odo. Oil was changed within the past 100 miles. Brakes and pads are stock, assuming standard brake fluid. I'll be on a brand new set of MPSC2.
What are things I should absolutely do prior to the event. I was told:
brake pads, fluid, and to bring an extra set of pads to the track for when I toast mine (is this really necessary?). Anyone able to confirm this and add to this list? Also, is track day insurance recommended. Appears to be $1100 for the two day event, with a $2500 deductible.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

zone 1 pca guys are good, not too much to worry in terms of some asshat slamming into the side of you, do insurance if you want, some will say its worth it and others will say its not.....bring pads with you if you are there for more than a day (which it seems you are), oil and the other things you mentioned. HAVE FUN!!!!
My honest opinion is that you won't need another set of brake pads. It's a HPDE, not hardcore racing. Your stock pads will be fine, and you won't need to change them during the event. You probably won't need to change them after the event either.
I suggest fresh oil and brake fluid. You'll read tons about different brands of brake fluid, but I kept mine stock and I don't think it matters all that much unless you are really braking at 100% intensity multiple times from crazy speeds. Hardcore guys will change the brake pads/rotors/lines/fluid but I think that's overkill for HPDE.
Insurance is very dependent on your situation. If you total your car, what will you do? Can you afford to self insure? If not, you should get insurance. I think they cap the value of the car at $120k or something, last time I used Lockton if I recall correctly. That might have changed.
Have fun!!

Get Lockton track insurance. Highest available Limit of liability is $150k
Change brake fluid to Castrol SRF -- the highest boiling point on the market
Make sure brake pads and tires are good before going

High temp brake fluid. Bring some oil. Check your tire pressures before and after each run. Do not use parking brake. Do a cool down around the parking lot after you come off the track. There are no winners, just losers that wreck their car. Its not a race. Enjoy and have fun.
