Clarkson reviews 991
Great post Sapster. Thanks.
Can anyone translate "Porsche has never shaken off the City boy braces-and-Bollinger image it earned in the Eighties. Which means you are never, ever, let out of side turnings" from English to American for me? Thanks.

"City boy braces-and-Bollinger image" - Noveau Riche City of London (i.e. - Wall St in London) guys with lots of money, but little class. Braces in the UK = suspenders in the US. Bollinger is a brand of Champagne.
"Which means you are never, ever, let out of side turnings" - People don't like the image of a Porsche and won't let you merge into traffic if you are driving one as a result.
No problem -

I can live with that. We don't let anyone merge into traffic in NJ anyway, no matter what they drive.

just because the city boys decided to drive good cars doesn`t mean the car is ****. Clarkson still has some issues, seriously.
...
PS: Since finishing this piece, I’ve realised the Porsche actually gets no stars at all because it’s useless. Last Sunday the tyre went flat. There is no spare. And no depot carried anything that would fit.
Recently a friend of mind had a flat tyre in his 911 and it took Porsche two weeks to find a replacement. Unless the manufacturer can address this, there is simply no point buying its cars. Because one day you will need, say, to take your mum to hospital and you will have to phone and cancel.

Clarkson’s verdict:*A fab carmade useless*by a puncture

I believe that as this car makes its way through the market - this should disappear.
That seems to be inline with every other review. The question now would be, is the 991 still a 911? 991 owners please don't take insult to this - obviously the car is still a 911 given it's badge - I'm referring to its characteristics and roots.
It's still a 911. You can feel weight at the back if you push it. It's smoother and the limits are higher, that's all. I thought the biggest different was the turn in behavior, it's really sharp now. The packaging is the same, just more efficient with a touch more space.
If going from air cooled with round headlights and a specific body style to the 996 did not rob it of its claim to being a 911, and it did not (and should not have), then why would this? Indeed, in the same article Clarkson makes a point of how similar it is to the car before (997) car before that (996) and car before that (993).
If we are going to debate this stuff, really, I might as well go back to reading about politics.
OT..
But why does the M5 get so much bad mouthing about it being complicated, when the E63 is just as complicated? Just as many buttons to set the suspension, gearbox, AMG button etc etc. And there are quite a few more cars with 37 buttons to set them up.
The E60 M5 does have more settings for the gearbox, but is it just that it was the first car to have all these settings that makes everyone moan about it?
As an M-fan, I feel it's a bit unfair..
I know Clarkson is a bit of a child, and takes every chance he gets to be funny about other peoples/cars faults, but still..
