991 radar detector install ?

Has anyone installed a escort 9500ci in a 991?
Where did you mount the display and control boxes?

Mine is going in next week to have a 9500ci installed. Was a diehard V1 fan but the 9500ci won me over. I ran the V1 and 9500 together for 6 months. 9500 did as well or better in detection and 90% better in eliminating false alarms. And I don't have to pay another $1,500 for a Laser Interceptor. Which the 9500ci seemed to do as well as also.
I have the cigarette lighter and
ashtray with cover. So the controls will go in there so you can close the lid. The display is tougher. Was thinking at the bottom of the gauges in that little space between the tach and speedo. Or you could have it mounted just behind the PDK logo on the steering column. Not sure yet.

Open to suggestions.

Two other questions: Where to put the radar antenna? And, where do you put the GPS antenna?
I have not looked but the radar antenna might fit behind the center blank plastic piece in the front bumper. I am hoping that the GPS antenna cord is long enough to bring it out and put it under the bumper cover. It won't work under a fender. Only other place I can think of is by the rearview mirror and I really don't want it there. My X5M had plastic front fenders, we just put it under the front fender and it worked great.

I had an Escort 9500ci in my 2010 GT3 and thought it was a good unit. I took delivery on a 991 cab today and I am thinking about the K40 Calibre, the 991 has fewer locations for mounting the 9500ci unit. The K40 unit has the same radar and laser detectors as the 9500ci plus a rear radar detector. Seems like a much cleaner install because it uses a remote and two small LEDs instead of the control panel & separate display.

Any opinions or experience with the K40 Calibre?

Newman-Are you talking about the K40 RL360?

I have been trying to find a real review of this, but for some reason have been having trouble. The history and track record of K40 does not seem as positive as Escort or Valentine, but I think the new RL360 may be better than the older systems. If you find anything, please let me know.

I had the K40 installed. I like it. It does give a good deal of false positives, but it is very sensitive. The install was very nicely done. I liked it in the 997 better. The blue indicator lights focused up onto the dash in such a way as to be highly visible without getting in the way. In the 991, at least in my install, they are a bith harder to see. Still very good.

Newman. How do you like your ride? Any pictures?

Gleek: I am not sure, you are correct it is surprisingly hard to get information on the web. The older K40 model did have a bad reputation and I don't think it had the laser diffusers (is there a difference between diffusers and shifters?).

I suspect that the RL360 is the unit that was recommended to me by the dealer; he had two reasons: a) cleaner install, and b) rear looking radar as well as the forward unit. One minor concern I have with the 9500ci, I installed it over three years ago in my GT3, so the technology may have improved and/or the K40 has caught up or passed the Escort unit.

I plan to resource this further and will make a decision next week, I am out of town anyway so I cannot have the unit installed until I return the following week. Mike has installed the K40 (which model?) and his feedback will be valuable.

Love the car - will post some pictures this evening. Very, very different than the GT3, but not in a bad way - until you can really get on it, it's very hard to be objective at this early date. Lots of electronics - seems to be an improvement over my 2010 car, but need to sort some of it out.

I am pretty sure the technology has not changed in 3 years. If it has, it is just little bits.

two really nice things about 9500ic are the following:

1. upgradable thru laptop
2. GPS eliminates almost all false alarms after it learns them

I think they are all very comparable and the literature is all over the map. I don't find any of the literature pursuasive, objective or authoritative. I would bet that you can't go too far wrong with any of them - I went with the K40 on that basis and on the basis of the very clean integration and install. I don't love any of them as most of the cops are using point and shoot lasers and the laser jamming technology is ... questionable. JMO.

998M 04-13-2012 09:52 AM

I have had great experience with laser jamming. I started with Lidatek back in 2002. I was getting hit almost every week. Only one ticket by laser and that was because one of the two receiver/transmitters failed. Moved to Laser Interceptor in 2005. Lasered too many times to count. Zero tickets by laser. I can assure you that most of these I would have been flat busted. For over 6 months, I had a Laser Interceptor, 9500ic and V1 in my truck all at the same time. They all work very well and are comparable. One time the V1 would pick up radar first then another time the 9500 would. Always the laser worked flawlessly.
My installer has a laser gun. We have played with it. I can assure you, the laser jammer on the 9500ic works very very well.

The ashtray is the perfect location for the 9500ci control unit. For maximum stealth for the display, inside the center console is the best place. Of course, I wouldn't have any first-hand experience with this unit since I live in Virginia.

Has anyone here personally seen the k40 rl360 work as advertised (especially the laser shifters)?

Center console? Are you talking about the spot under the arm rest between the seats? If so, how do you see it.

Yes, my attorney told me "deny, deny, deny". Or was that Eddie Murphy "Wasn't me, Baby"

Newman 04-13-2012 07:04 PM

I spoke with my dealer's installer on the K40 RL360 radar/laser shifter - this is a new unit which he believes is superior in some respects to the Escort 9500ci (he will install either unit). He acknowledged that the older K40 Calibre was not a good unit and it has been discontinued.

His arguments for the K40 are 1) cleaner install with only two LEDs and a remote; it has rear radar detector which the Escort does not, and 3) it has better laser shifting technology in that it can discriminate better on false alarms. Apparently Toyota, Lexus and Mercedes are all now equipped with the adaptive cruise control which uses a laser in the infra-red spectrum very close to police laser frequency. K40 has algorithms in their software that detect the cruise control lasers, at this time Escort does not. I can tell you that I had many false alarms on my GT3 with the 9500ci - not sure if it was Toyota and Mercedes cruise control or not, but it was annoying but you thought you had been nailed.

According to this guy, you can update the K40 through a USB port using the Escort data base. The K40 also now has the GPS locating feature. I cannot vouch for any of this information as I do not know the installer as I am using a new dealer, but he sounded to be knowledgeable and he would install the 9500ci if I asked him to. I plan to continue to research it before making a decision. Hope this helps.
