Finally Ordered my new 991 in Guards Red

This will be my first Porsche. Selling my white 2009 E93 M3 Convertible. I originally went with Basalt Black Metallic because it was a safe, gorgeous color (with Ceramic Brakes). But my heart wanted Guards Red (I've never owned a red car). I finally made the call and changed my custom order to Guards Red today after going to Cars and Coffee this morning in Plano.

Here is my configuration:

Guards Red Exterior
Black/Platinum Grey Leather Interior (was going to go with Luxor Beige but I was worried about dash glare and I prefer a black steering wheel).
Burmester Audio
Premium Package Plus with Adaptive Sports Seats Plus
Park Assist (Front and Rear)
Sunroof
Electric folding mirrors
Model Designation "911"
PDCC with PASM
Sports Exhaust System
PDK
Sport Chrono Package
Carrera S Wheel (this wheel most closely resemble my M3's competition package wheels)
Wheel Center Caps with Colored Porsche Crest
Wheel Spacers, 5mm
Multi-function steering wheel
Two-tone leather interior
Porsche Crests on Headrests
Door sill guards in stainless steel, illuminated
Key painted exterior color

Build completion is targeted for 10/18. This is going to be the longest three months ever :-)

I have attached images I found online that most closely match my config! I'll post the real deal in November...

Nice - I often dream of a Guards Red coupe with the Tan interior - isn't there a way you can order a black dash top, door tops, headliner and black steering wheel and keep everything else Luxor or Sand?

Look forward to seeing your car @ C&C.

:)

Rocket_boy 09-01-2012 02:53 PM

Sorry, but I'm afraid you just can't do that as I must have the the only Guards Red 991 in DFW! Mine has a build date of 9/18, so at least I have a month or two on you :-)

Seriously though, like you all my past Porsches have been black, or dark colors. Wanted something different this time and Guards Red kept haunting my brain, so that it is. I did get to see one ready for delivery when I was finalizing my order, it is everything I thought it would be. While a bit rare, it is a stunning color on the 991.

Nice spec too!, I went with many of the same options including Burmester, good choice. Waiting like you now, but my car is now locked with no changes allowed being close to production, can't wait till it gets here.

Nicely Specced.....Good for you for getting Red !

Sweet! Did you go with Boardwalk or Park Place? I ordered through Boardwalk even though I live in UP. Great service and my sales guy has been really helpful. Which wheels did you go with?

Coming...hopefully very soon! Black/Luxor Beige (Sand is the old 997 color). But you don't want it to look like the 991 Cabriolet pictured below!

From an earlier post:

A) Two Tone Interiors: Someone from 'Porsche Exclusive' mentioned to me two weeks ago (at the temporary Porsche Zentrum set up at Quail Lodge) that Porsche is about to allow an expanded selection of Bi-Color interiors on their 991 model. For example, they will allow a 'Black/Carrera Red' interior combination for which there is some demand. Currently, that is not easy to do well on the 991, other than the two standard Bi-Color offerings of 'Agate/Pebble Grey' and 'Black/Platinum Grey'. Up to now, a nightmare scenario may occur when folks order a deviating color dash and top of the door trims other than the standard Bi-Colors offerings! Take a look at the attached photo of a 991 Cabriolet with a 'Luxor Beige' interior and deviating leather dash & upper door trims in 'Black' leather. The current ordering system inexplicably allows all the soft-touch plastic parts in the interior to remain 'Luxor Beige', not 'Black' at the appropriate places in the dash (vents/speakers), rear cab shelf area and circular plug on door trim. The results is a visual mismatch of epic proportions!

I feel quite bad for the unsuspecting owner who ordered this cab with high expectations of a beautiful two-tone interior! It also shows that anyone must be careful in what you order from Porsche. PAG will build it as requested by your dealer in the computer order guides, even when it looks like a terrible thing (as in this case). There is no second guessing the customer or a friendly email to dealer asking someone to please reconsider! If that is what you order, we will build it, Jawohl! That is in part why I am doing my threads on 6Speedonline. So that our forum members know how important it's to pay attention to all details in your order and choose wisely from the multiple options offered by 'Porsche Exclusive'!

B) The new ordering system will soon allow the subcontractors to supply the production line with color coordinated 'soft touch' parts when a customer makes a request for a Bi-Color interior. In the case of the Cabriolet in the attached photo, all the areas surrounding the 'Black' leather dash will be done in soft-touch painted in 'Black'. Same for the other trim pieces in the rear of the cabin. It's really a small change in their order guides which really should have been allowed from day one so that the owner of this 'Luxor Beige' 991 cab should not have had to experienced this abomination!

C) I would still want to know how they will coordinate the Alcantara on a coupe in the case of a Bi-Color customized interior. For example, if you order a full 'Luxor Beige' interior, the headliner and A & B pillars are done in 'Luxor Beige' Alcantara (photo # 2). Will they changed this to 'Black' or 'Charcoal' Alcantara if you order 'Black/Luxor Beige'? Or 'Agate' Alcantara when you chose 'Agate/Luxor Beige'? I would think so.

D) The impetus for all of this change (in my opinion) comes from the complaint of many that the lighter color interiors allow the dash to reflect on the raked windshield and obstruct vision! So PAG is trying to remedy this objection by offering consumers a choice. Personally, I also think it looks quite attractive. I expect to see quite a few 'Black/Carrera Red', 'Black/Luxor Beige' and 'Agate/Luxor Beige' interiors, to name but a few of the options!

Nice Spec. Congratulations!! Did you go Carbon breaks? I'm on my 3rd month of waiting for my 1st Porsche. Still have 1 to go. Hard, but I know well worth it.

Cevin 09-01-2012 05:45 PM

Congrats - You'll have something to be very thankful for come Thanksgiving!!! Specs are great! Can't wait for the pics.

Attilas 09-01-2012 06:34 PM

Congrats. I am in a similar dilemma. I actually have a red E90 M3 now (first red car ive ever had) and it's been a while since I've had a black car, so that is what I am planning for my 991, but seeing more pics like this of guards red get me second guessing myself.

Great spec. The wait is agonizing, but well worth it.

Park Place for my 997.2 and 991, Boardwalk for my Cayman S before then. Both are usually great to deal with.

Went with the Sport Design wheels painted black,....love the look on a red or white 991. Saw a guards red Cayman R with black wheels and that is what sold me on the combo. Washed and waxed properly in sunlight I don't think it gets any better!

Agree with you totally,....one of the major reasons I never tried to order a piece meal bi-color interior,....it never looks right under the current build configuration.

IMO for the price paid for a new 991 more interior options are needed. A bi-color black/red, black/tan and even a grey/blue as standard configurator options should be there already.

Anyone ever worked with the Aston Martin website?....talk about any combination thinkable, really cool.

af330i 09-02-2012 05:12 PM

There is something so beautiful about a Red 991 ... I went black this time around but the next one will be either Red or white ...

Congrats ... your order sheet has what I consider some perfect options and some over the top items which makes it just soooo nice ... kind of like ordering ice cream(perfect options) and then including Sprinkles and hot fudge ... oh yeah over the top is good !!!!!!!

Congrats and the 3 month wait will be here before you know it.

Congrats!! Great to have another 991 in DFW.

Dallas991 09-03-2012 09:37 AM

So now I am debating whether to add back the PCCB ceramic brakes with yellow calipers. I had originally added them when I configured the 991 with Basalt Black. But once I switched to guards red, my gut reaction was that the standard red calipers would look better.

Thoughts? I like the idea of the ceramics brakes (lighter, limited brake dust, higher heat tolerance) and can afford them, but would the red calipers look better on the guards red with standard carrera s wheels?

dhill911 09-03-2012 09:43 AM

I think the Red would look better. Yellow, together with Red makes me think of McDonalds. You could have the Calipers repainted if you really want Carbon Ceramics.

Rocket_boy 09-03-2012 11:09 AM

Lots of red 360/430 Ferrari's have yellow calipers, no problem that I see with them.

IMO,....any exterior color with those huge PCCB brakes looks fine. You just have to make sure and justify the cost. I do like them for all the points you mentioned, but they still are a bunch of money that hardly offers any financial returns later,...if that even bothers you.

Sloopy 09-03-2012 11:37 AM

If you can drive one with and one without. I think you will find that you won't be without. Huge difference in feel and ride. Feels like the car looses a lot of weight which it does. 40lb of un-sprung feels like loosing a couple of hundred and the ride is better.

I dive the CA mountain passes and find that I can accelerate into a turn, down hill, and break into the turn. As the heat rises, they just get better..... No smell no fade. Like magic.

If the color is an issue have your S done in yellow by Bumperplugs. Yellow looks great on Red.

It appears your budget is not very limited, so I ask whether you have considered waiting for the 991 turbo (probably under a year away at this point)? It may be well worth it.

But if going with a guards red S I would probably stick with the steel brakes for the matching calipers.

Thanks. Turbo feels like a whole different world. And I actually prefer the naturally aspirated engines (coming from M3) and don't like the big, fixed spoiler.

I think I am going to just stick with the standard S brakes for now. I could always upgrade later to some Brembo ceramics if I get the itch.

So last question - given I prefer the styling of the Carrera S over the Turbo, should I consider the newly announced Power Kit?

Havok 09-03-2012 01:45 PM

I have my guards red 911 carrera S coming mid october, with the sport design package, and a ton of other options.

Sure, if you can afford it, by all means get the powerkit. It includes sport chrono and sport exhaust which are almost must have options in my opinion. The extra power won't be a massive difference, but it will be noticeable.

BTW, great color choice. Pics rarely do full justice to guards red, it looks even better in real life.

Dallas991 09-04-2012 02:55 PM

Made my final changes: Added the Power Kit (which includes the Sports Exhaust and Chrono Package) and removed the Ceramic Brakes. I figure I can always add the ceramic brakes later (Brembo) if I feel I need them. I went with the Power Kit over just waiting for the 991 Turbo because I prefer no fixed spoiler and coming from an M3 love naturally aspirated engines.

Here is the final 991 S Coupe configuration:

Guards Red Exterior
Black/Platinum Grey Leather Interior (was going to go with Luxor Beige but I was worried about dash glare and I prefer a black steering wheel).
Burmester Audio
Premium Package Plus with Adaptive Sports Seats Plus
Park Assist (Front and Rear)
Sunroof
Electric folding mirrors
Model Designation "911"
PDCC with PASM
PDK
Exclusive Power Kit (which includes the Sport Chrono Package + Sports Exhaust System)
Carrera S Wheel (this wheel most closely resemble my M3's competition package wheels)
Wheel Center Caps with Colored Porsche Crest
Wheel Spacers, 5mm
Multi-function steering wheel
Two-tone leather interior
Porsche Crests on Headrests
Door sill guards in stainless steel, illuminated
Key painted exterior color

Only six more weeks until build (assuming no delays now that I've added the Power Kit...)

And hopefully four weeks to ship to Dallas...

Check out the TechArt paddle shifter conversion. Nice to have for the MF steering wheel.

Dallas991 09-10-2012 10:06 AM

After seeing a Guards Red Carrera 991 S Coupe in person this weekend, I went back to the color drawing board. I love the red. But it is a lot of red, particularly on the backside. And when I see used Red Carreras at the dealership, the paint looks tired and doesn't have the shine of metallics when it ages.

So, I've switched my order to GT Silver Metallic. I still also love Basalt Black, but am really worried about maintaining it. I am OCD about cleaning it every week, but my last black car still ended up with swirl marks and noticeable scratches. While there is still a chance of a change, here is my updated build as of this AM :-) :

GT Silver Metallic Exterior
Black Full Leather Interior (I would go with Black/Platinum if I choose Basalt Black, but for Silver, all black feels "classic").
Burmester Audio
Premium Package Plus with Adaptive Sports Seats Plus
Park Assist (Front and Rear)
Sunroof
Electric folding mirrors
Model Designation "911"
PDCC with PASM
PDK
Exclusive Power Kit (which includes the Sport Chrono Package + Sports Exhaust System)
Carrera S Wheel (this wheel most closely resemble my M3's competition package wheels)
Wheel Center Caps with Colored Porsche Crest
Wheel Spacers, 5mm
Multi-function steering wheel
Porsche Crests on Headrests
Door sill guards in stainless steel, illuminated
Key painted exterior color

Still looking at 10/18 build date, so at some point my order will be locked down :-)

Dallas991 09-10-2012 10:07 AM

And here is a picture of what it should look like (referenced from another forum entry).

You may want to drop the "Wheel Center Caps with Colored Porsche Crest". I think the standard silver center caps (as shown in the picture you posted) look better on a silver car. Especially after you swap out the amber side markers for clear ones.

dhill911 09-10-2012 11:47 AM

Excellent Choice! I too went with GT Silver, Black Full Leather, and Carerra Classic Wheels. I did not go with Color Crest's on the wheels, as I think the standard will look best on a silver car.

I will as soon as it arrives. It is in an enclosed carrier on its way to me as I type. I was told today, I should be able to take delivery by Thursday or Friday.

Excelent choice! the 991 looks great in silver.

Imo the colored wheel centers are one of the best cosmetic options, they match the hood crest and make the wheels pop.

Just picked mine up at the dealership on Wednesday. As promised, here are a few pictures. I'm in the process of detailing it, so I will post some more in sunlight after I finish this weekend. Best of luck with your decision.

Constantinisms 10-03-2012 11:01 AM

Hey gang;
Have two things in common with this thread and a story you might find interesting (maybe comforting) especially if you have a 991 on order.
On January 4, 2012, I ordered a guards red 991S (black int.) with some nice options . I wanted a coupe and a glass sunroof .... I was advised there wouldn't be one available on the 991 ... so I ordered it with the std sunroof.
The car arrived in April .... but 2 weeks prior, while roaming about in cyberspace, I came across a thread (maybe here) about the 2013 now being available with a glass roof .... and indeed there it was on the configurator ... So I got on the horn with my (great) dealer and after much discussion, they agreed to order me another with the glass roof. (very professional bunch) ... I showed my appreciation by adding some extras including espresso leather 18-way seats ...
But this is not the end of the tale . Due to arrive in August, repeated delays ... because ... you guessed it ...the glass roof ...
It is now scheduled for production mid-october with an ETA of mid-november .... that will be 10 months since my original order ....

Feel better about your wait times? Hope so!

Since I planned on picking up my 991 at the factory at the end of June, I insisted that it be a 2013 model. Soon after I placed the order, the glass s/r was announced for the 2013's, so I added it to my build. My guess is that if I weren't taking factory delivery, I'd also have been looking at a long production delay. It's one thing to tell a customer that his car is delayed, it's quite another to tell him that after he has air and hotel reservations for a two week European vacation build around a factory delivery date. In any case, I love the glass s/r which floods the cabin with daylight at speed without the pesky wind buffeting.

Spyder

Constantinisms 10-03-2012 02:20 PM

Agreed. I think the glass totally transforms the interior space, even with a lighter interior. I had an M3 cab for 5 years and as much as I love the open, its either wide open or shut ... not to mention dragging around an extra 300 lbs...
The black glass with the black wheels and other black touches looks quite fab, imo.
And that espresso interior is just delightful in smell, feel and colour ....
T-6 weeks ....
