Drove a 458 today...
funny - it took me 5 minutes to figure out how to spell that name and I still screwed it up. Yup, I mean da chick.
p.s. I own a 991 2SC with sport exhaust, etc....
Both are normally aspirated, high-revving RWD cars. The Turbo S, being AWD, forced-induction, heavier and softer is a more of a GT car.
458 is a rocket ship. It has a very fast steering... The exhaust is intoxicating. You can't compare the two cars. I do agree the ride is not as compliant as the 991. 458 is more of a toy and 991 is more of a daily driver.... However, I would love to own a 458 any day...

The 458's sound felt more engineered and the steering was loosey goosey compared to the porsche. Also recently drove a 599 and that was a true POS IMO. The 458 felt that it could approach 599 territory in a few years while the 991 would stay "solid".
Granted, 99% of people would disagree with me and I don't blame them. I'm not a track guy or gear head of any sort.
Was a couple days away from buying a 458 but have decided to stick with my plan of ordering a GT3. Have a feeling that I'll have a real argument to make at that point.
I will consider one over a 991 GT3. Yes, it is more expensive, a little less practical, but nothing looks, feels and sounds like a Ferrari, imo.
Just some comments and observations:
I've said many times....dollar for dollar....the 991 is just unbeatable....period.
458 is incredible...hope to get one.
Every car guy should have a Ferrari at least once in their life....and having both a Porsche and Ferrari in your garage meets all your needs.
New GT3....well, just the sound makes me weak in the knees

The F-car was certainly beautiful and fun to drive and made great sounds (and it was a radio delete car because anyone who wants to listen to the stereo in that car shouldn't be driving that car, IMO), but comparing features and performance with what my $128K buys today, the 991 wins on every count by a wide margin.
I love the look of the 458 but it's just a bit too ostentatious, IMO. If I were young and single, different story: I'd wear that car like a pea**** shows off his tail, but for my driving needs & wants, I'm thrilled to be joining the ranks of P-car owners.
Granted, my Bentley Continental GT convertible can be viewed by some as ostentatious but I prefer to think of it as understated and tasteful.
I have driven a California and that just felt like a GT very compliant and easy around town. The closest I got was taking a 458 driver out in my R8GT and he offered to buy it on the spot. He said that the road was speaking to him in my car versus the 458 was machine over man. I sat in the 458, the interior was mind blowing, the exhaust sensation, not sure about the drive. I was supposed to take it for a spin but decided for next time, it started to rain etc.
Honestly 911s are amazing, no question about it. But Ferraris are special and I do hope to be blessed to own one some day. This time around it was just too rich for my blood.

I have driven the 458 a few times on course. It is an amazing machine, no doubt. I was running faster times in a 997tt pdk though...it may have not felt like it, but times don't lie.
Regardless, I would take the 458 over it...I haven't driven a 991 yet so I can't say how it compares, but I think I would still take the 458 over it. It is just such a beautiful machine and the sound...oooooh the sound!!! LOL.

There are many reasons NOt to get a 458 but the one you listed (how the car actually drives) is not one of them . It's a fantastic driving car. I just wish that all of the other reasons : 1) 18 mo wait to order a new one, 2) quirky service manuals for technicians rather than organized like Porsche 3) massive depreciation with higher miles 4) huge repair bills 5) Cant park it anywhere without some curb attention rendering fingerprints all over the car 6) enormous tire pricing , 7) difficulty in obtaining parts if not in stock .. I can go on .. but how the car drives (in my opinion) is the ONLY reason to actually buy the car.
As a very sick and addicted car guy, I don't know how to choose between all the cars mentioned. I am not sure which I would take, as they all would require some sacrifice in one area with a benefit in another. Not one of them is a perfect 10 in every criteria.
Right off the bat, the 458 is something that would make me feel uncomfortable being seen in, most of the time. Also where would I feel comfortable parking it???
The 991S really is an all around great DD, but would not hit top marks in most of the most emotional reasons for buying a car compared to other less practical cars.
No without a doubt right answer for me, but wont complain if you gave me any of these.
And who the hell is saying the 599 is a POS
I want an explanation please.
