DVD Movies

HI...my 991 does not play the video of a DVD. However, it does play the audio and recognize that its a DVD. Is this normal or am I supposed to be able to watch the movie as long as I am in park like other vehicles? Thanks!

Normal, it will not allow you to watch video, but will play audio.

Not even when parked? Then what is the point of having a DVD player?

I thought it strange too. Why bother having a DVD player just for sound. thats why I thought something was wrong with my car.

It's only for playing Audio-DVDs or MP3-DVDs.

In europe there's an option for a TV-tuner (DVB-T, probably PAL only) and maybe that will also play Video-DVD, although I'm not sure about that. Never did any resaerch, because it's an expensive (EUR 1500) and useless option IMO.

The PCM is the same unit that is in the Cayenne and it has the option in the U.S. to play DVDs in the rear seats if you buy that option. As Suzy991 points out I thought the PCM in the 991 could play DVDs as well with that option outside of the U.S. I don't know the exact but in the U.S. it is against the law to play video (dvd or tv) thru a car system that would be viewable by the driver (yes, I know, we can text, nav, email, and more but from a legacy point of view videos were all you could do when whatever restriction it is was written).

Same here. I have TV-function in my Q5 (demo-car, otherwise I would never buy such option) and it is only allowed to work when the S-Tronic is in P. For the backseats, it works also when I'm driving. Since I don't have kids and rarely backseat passengers, it's a useless option for me, but it was on the car anyway.
BTW... In the Audi it can be reprogrammed in the MMI system to work even when the S-tronic is not in P, but since it is illegal it can only be done by yourself or someone who knows how to reprogram these things with help of some cable and software. I guess that could also be done for the PCM from Porsche... Just guessing...

I don't have the needs to view a DVD or TV when I'm driving.... I prefer watching the road and traffic around me

with my last BMW 5 Series. The DVD player only plays video while in PARK. But there are aftermarket software you can purchase to change it so you can also play it while driving. I purchased one for $150.

I thought PCM can at least play video while in PARK. If it could, then I am sure someone out there sells a software to change that.

I don't think so. You have to go the route Fester is suggesting....something like NavTV sells.
