Jackpoint Jackstands, a slick bit of kit

I had to try these out, and put the car up on them for the first time yesterday. The novelty is that you both jack the car and use the jackstand at the factory jacking point on the car and they work as advertised. These are the lo-profile model and they're pretty slick. If you have $ 300 sitting around and want a good toy, get a pair of them (assuming you work on your own car). You'll like them.

This could be a silly question, but how do you go about lifting the car and slipping these in the factory jacking points, which would be occupied by the jack at time of raising the vehicle?

Looks to me like you put the pad from the stand on the jack pad, lift the car, then slip the jack stand under the pad holding the car up -- then lower and the Jack stand pad will stay on top of the stand....

Did I get that right?

Probably easier to watch this video than try to explain it.

OK, I'll come and watch you do that on your car. . Oh, looks like you're correct.

Very cool. Thx for sharing, drcollie.

That Coravin might have to come off of your list.

I've had one for a few months and it is fantastic. I couldn't be happier with it.

Unfortunately, I received an email from them last night that a few people have reported broken bottles with the system and for safety reasons they are stopping sales until a fix is determined, which they are expecting in July some time.

They are also requesting that current owners stop using them for now.

Dear Coravin Customers,

We hope that you enjoy using your Coravin™ Wine Access System. This communication follows up on our notification from February 2014 about updates to the Important Safeguards for the proper and safe use of the Coravin System.

As we told you in February, it has come to our attention that, in certain circumstances, wine bottles can burst when used with the Coravin System, presenting a risk of lacerations. We believe the likelihood of this occurrence is very rare since wine bottles are designed to withstand significantly greater pressure than the low pressure the Coravin System places into the bottle. Nevertheless, Coravin has now received seven reports of bottles bursting including one report of a laceration.

We have voluntarily reported these incidences to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in anticipation of a recall. We have submitted a Corrective Action Plan to update the Coravin System instructions and warnings and will provide all existing and future customers with a remedy package that includes a neoprene wine bottle sleeve for use with the Coravin System.

We have voluntarily stopped selling and shipping Coravin Systems until we can fully implement an approved Corrective Action Plan. We are hopeful that in the next 30 days Coravin will be receiving, processing and beginning to ship remedy packages to our customer base. Once we have received approval for the Corrective Action Plan we will begin shipping Coravin Systems containing a wine bottle sleeve. We hope this disruption will be over in July and apologize to you for the inconvenience.

In the interim,
Please stop using the Coravin System until you receive the remedy package from us.
And, please read our updated Proper Use and Important Safeguards Guide which can be found in the FAQ section of Coravin's website.
We will communicate any further details or requirements as part of a follow on communication plan. If you have any questions or concerns about this communication, please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly at update@coravin.com or call 1-844-267-2846.

If you have given a Coravin System to anyone else, please forward this communication to them.

We appreciate your support and hope your Coravin System continues to change the way you enjoy, serve and share wine for years to come.

Sincerely,
The Coravin Team

My brand new set of JackPoint JackStands are for sale, if anyone is interested.
My Jack Arm is too wide to clear the sloted opening.
So I never even used them.

Dr. C--
It is an ingenious design, allowing you to both jack the car and support the car on stands using the same designated jacking point. I have a set myself, with the low-profile pads, but I can't get my jack underneath the car when the pad is positioned on the jack's saddle. I'm using an older Griot's-branded aluminum racing-style jack, which appears to be almost identical in design to the one you're using--from the pics it looks like you have a Pittsburgh/Harbor Freight jack.

I need about 1.5cm or so more clearance to get the jack with pad under the car--the only way to get it to work is to take another jack and slightly lift the car beforehand on the other jacking point on that side, which kind of defeats the purpose of this slick design.

Either your jack has 2cm or more low-profile clearance than mine (which I doubt), or your car doesn't sit as low as mine. Do you have SPASM or regular PASM?

I have SPASM on my car and no issues with the jack, though I use my lo-profile one with them that is from Harbor Freight and it clears in just fine. I have a large floor jack that won't fit. 20" wheels on the car, and I have about 1" extra to play with when I run it under the car with the Jackpoint pad atop it.

Will it work if you get the pad pin in place and then slide the jack under it?

My buddy has a set he uses for his M3.
It's a great product and really works as advertised.

Might have to pick up a set down the road.
