991 to 993...am I crazy?!?!
 

Recently purchased a fully loaded (PDK, full leather, PSE, etc) '14 991 4S. It's the most beautiful car ever but something is missing. For some reason, I am just not excited to drive it. The car seems almost numb and I feel totally disconnected from it. Honestly, I felt more of a connection to my base 997.1, 6MT.

I'm seriously considering a trade for a 993 TT (yes, I am well aware of the price difference) to help satisfy my urge for a better driving and ownership experience.

Just curious if anyone else feels the same way...

Have you fallen or hit your head lately?? : ) I've had no such experiences or desires. Saw a 997 GTS today at the dealer. Nice car, but after looking at it quite a bit, was very happy to have a 991 C2S. There is such a difference even with the previous generation.

I think the 991 would be a better daily driver. If you're simply looking for a raw weekender then I could understand your wish for a 993. It is not that they can't be used as a daily but the refinement (maybe too much for some) and the creature comforts would be missed on daily commutes, at least if it was me. Good luck in your decision making sir.

Good luck driving 993 in stop n go traffic. You're guarateed to have a severe headache.

991 is a split personality car - GT car OR aggressive sports car in sport+.

Surprised no one else said this yet -- why not own them both??

Honestly you don't say much about your driving requirements -- since you chose a 991 C4S I have to guess you drive it frequently (unless you just bought the most loaded car off the lot or something). If so, you will probably second - guess the move to 993 turbo before long. Like others said, daily driving will not be as "comfortable" as in the 991, not to mention the maintenance etc over time. But if none of this is a concern, have fun and go with what moves you!

You should have gotten the 991 with 7MT. It would ahve made you feel a lot different.

Totally different cars, the 993 is much more primitive in every way, has some bad handling attributes at speed in climbing turns like at VIR (front end wants to pogo) and while admittedly is a drop-dead gorgeous car, you may find very quickly you miss the creature comforts of a 991. This was my 993....no way I would ever go back to this except as a piece of artwork that doesn't get driven (you will ruin the value of these cars by putting miles on them). They are fun to look at, though....handsome lines on the car.

Funny you mention the erosion of value with miles. The 993TT I am currently looking at has ~110k miles and is priced very low...~$70k. Also, I work out of town every week, so commuting is not really an issue.

I tend to only drive my car on the weekends due to working out of town every week.

As for my 991, I got a great deal on a fully loaded car with only ~4 miles. I didn't option the car myself, but it is very close to how I would have built the car. As for owning both...I currently do not have the space in my house.

The 993 may feel a bit "antique" compared to the 991 but the 993 is the most advanced and refined air cooled Porsche. It is very much capable of being a daily driver. Hugely competent and flexible engine. Loads of performance. Fantastic brakes. Smooth 6-speed. Supple suspension. Comfortable seats and real A/C and heat. And nothing looks or sounds like it.

People ask me which I prefer, my 991 or my 993. I don't have an answer for that. For now, I couldn't bear to be without either.

I don't think you're crazy at all.

I would do it.

I just looked at a 993 and almost bought it, but just for an investment not to replace the 991. I enjoyed it very much but it's not as good a car as a 991 and at that age, be prepared for some maintenance bills and depreciation if it's going to be a DD.
