If you request an oil change "only" and not all the checking of boxes, a dealer should be able to do just the oil change for under $200.00

For the non do it yourselfers!

Many dealers won't trip the fault switch if you don't do the inspection, however.

Anything under warranty gets done at the dealership. Everything else gets done at my trusted independent Porsche mechanic. I would never, ever get non-warranty work done at the dealership. (Just as I would never buy tires from the dealership.)

sapphireblue is infamous around these parts
With my 10% Porsche Club discount, an oil change is $195 at my local dealer.

We've worked on a number of 6Speed members in SoCal from installs to basic maintenance - PM me or give me a call, we will get you taken cared of at a great price. We've got all the factory Porsche Diagnostic PIWIS and PIWIS 2 testers/tools on hand as well

I'm due for mine at 15,000km (10,000 mile) oil service. In Toronto, dealer is quoting me $385 (plus tax) and independent is quoting $325 (plus tax). Feels like it's about $100 more than what a Cayman oil change was, but maybe I'm mistaken. It shouldn't be.

I think those "checks" are necessary, yes, but you can certainly do them yourself. Checking the fluids is not difficult, checking tire depth requires you to bend over and look at the tires, etc. The owner's manual should have the locations of the drains, and you can check them as well.

Note to self: find out where those drains are.

And an oil change is a pretty easy DIY if you have a place to do it. If you're in the city, you'll need to find a friend who lives somewhere and has a few basic tools.

I change it myself at 5k intervals. On the 10s I have the dealer do it and look over the car. Hey, it's not a a $15k toyota.

Very happy for all the people that change their oil themselves, but this thread is about those of us that use the dealer/independent mechanic.

Question, does the 991 use more oil than the 997 did or the 987 did? Reason I ask is I'm being quoted $385 from my dealer for the 991 and I used to pay $250 for the Cayman. Wondering what the $135 increase in cost is for. And don't say 'cause it's a 991 and not a Camry. There's absolutely no reason the same service with the same parts should cost more from one model to the next.

Alright very helpful.

Do we know if the 3.4L engine on the C2 actually requires more oil than the 2.7L engine did on the Cayman? Is anything else more expensive?

Not really,

Actually the op asked if all the extra stuff that the dealership listed ( to justify the $500 service) was necessary...

Agree however that changing our own oil isn't completely relevant, but I think what is relevant that the vast majority of items that are typically touted by the dealers to justify the cost are trivial inspections and checks that owners should probably be doing anyway... So from that perspective you can pay $from a low of about $150 at an Indy to upwards of $700 in some cases..

But regardless of what you paid.... You pretty much get the same thing: An oil change + a $10 inspection.
