Harry's Lap Timer (or similar) recommendations?

I'm a newbie to this technology so pardon any silly questions. I am thinking of using my iPhone for video and interfacing with an app for use on track days. I hear Harry's Lap Timer is used by a lot of folks but I just looked at the App Store and see that they offer a Petrolhead and a Grand Prix version. I'm not really sure of the differences. Any thoughts, recommendations or experience on this? (Or any other app.)

Is this an easy thing to use? I am a technology-challenged, impatient type. I have no clue what is involved. The more simple this is the better.

And besides my iphone and the app I am assuming all I need is a solid mount. I was looking at the RamMount Twist Lock suction cup mount. Heard of it? Seems pretty solid. I don't want anything to go sliding out the window!

Thanks in advance for any feedback. I'm very interested to hear what you use.

I use Harry's Laptimer Grand Prix edition. If you are simply using with your phone as a camera, it's pretty straight forward. It becomes a bit more complex using with a remote GPS device (I recommend as the iPhone is not a true GPS) & a remote camera such as GoPro.

Brad,

What are you looking for out of the app in coordination with the video? Lots of track officers offer transponders for a ~$15-20 rental, and that'll give you pure lap times. I'm assuming you're more interested in the overlay stuff to go along with your videos.

I attempted to use HLT once a few years ago. GPS was horrible on my iPhone and I gave up.

I want to use it simply as another tool to improve my track skills. I'd like to pair the video with the times. Pretty much like most people do.

In my case I want to use my iPhone video for now. I was hoping the GPS in the phone would suffice at least until I get more into this.

Brad,
If you decide that the iPhone's pseudo GPS is inadequate, I use a Dual 150 external GPS and it works very well. They can obtained new for $100 or much less used on EBay. Welcome to the slippery slope!

have you tried hooking up lap-timer with an OBD-II device? to get a video similar to the one below.

I personally like the setup because it overlays some of the details from the car.

Trackadict app is another option. IT gives you the option of using several different overlays.

GoPro + Dashware for overlays on the video.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a OBD-II Bluetooth device?
