Owners of 991's to Opine: is the pcar too big
 

As Porsche is testing the 992 I wonder if you users of the 991 would like the company to make it larger, the length (wheelbase) was changed & then the rear track was increased for the turbo's; or should it be smaller. The adjustments made in 2012 were strongly supported but when does the 911 become too big ?

I think a lot of people already already feel the 991 is too big.. But what is too large is a highly subjective discussion ... And from a technical perspective, what is better in terms of stability, handling etc. might diverge from design aesthetics,

I'm guessing many 911 purists feel that the 991 has already become way too big. But then again, look at the stability of the car at high speeds and handling.. a 991 does things that 20 years ago you couldn't image in a rear engine car. But in addition to a lot of software, they have fiddled around with the wheelbase and the relationship of the engine within that.

Personally I think the 991 is already big enough.. I wouldn't want to make it any bigger and always find myself wishing it was smaller. From an aesthetics I think the 997 was almost perfect.. I'd be happy to give up my useless back seat if it made the car a tad shorter and I'd be happy to give up a little stability at 190 MPH.

I will admit I like some of the Luxuries of the 991 over previous generations and probably will more technology in the 992... But I don't want it to be a Luxury car, of which the 991 has a bit too much of.. Personally I hate the center console and miss having a parking brake. I fear most loosing the sports car feel.. Reminds me years ago of the old 240/260 Z cars.. By the time it became the 300Z it had become kind of an old foogy car and lost it's appeal.


What I hope most is they don't screw up the hood and front end lines I saw some purported 992 photo where the hood had a ridge in it looked more like a panny hood which I absolutely hate. I love the smooth lines on the front of a 911 and hope they never mess that up.

Really? A 991 won't outperform a 959, and it's 30 years old.

At some point cars have to stop getting bigger. They just have to. Roads are staying the same size!

The tarmac I enjoy is narrower too.

A C2? The 959 was a masterpiece when launched and still a legend but a new 991 TT/TTS is significantly faster 0-60, 1/4 mile and around a track.

I like the size too, being tall it helps. I think the bigger issue is the weight. Steve brought up the 959 and even with with all the tech it was only 3200 lbs. I hope the 992 is not any heavier than the already overweight 991.

Humm, interesting dimensions 7Tony. The scale of the image below beguiled me; the Le Mans car is so potent yet so small.

Many people think the 991 is too big, and this always makes for a lively discussion on the forums. The 997 is often touted as the perfect size for a modern 911, and the 991 is criticized because it's so much bigger than the 997. The problem with that argument is that the 991 really isn't bigger than the 997. It certainly has some visual cues that make it look larger, most notably a longer wheel base and larger diameter wheels. The truth can be found in the numbers, directly from Porsche. When comparing a 2009 C2 coupe to a 2013 C2 coupe, consider the following facts (Source: Porsche press kits from 2009 and 2013):

- The 991 weighs 33 lbs. less than the 997
- The 991 is 1.27 inches longer than the 997
- The 991 is the same width as the 997
- The 991 is 0.70 inches lower than the 997
- The 991 wheelbase is 4.0 inches longer than the 997's wheelbase
- The front track for the 991 is 1.81 inches wider than the 997
- The rear track for the 991 is 0.63 inches narrower than the 997

So is it really bigger? Not when you look at the facts. There are some people who still feel that it's bigger, despite the only significant difference being 1.27 inches in length.

The longer wheelbase allowed Porsche to really make changes to the interior. The interior of the 991 feels much larger than the previous models, despite the fact that the 991 isn't really bigger than other modern, water-cooled 911s.

Will the 992 be "bigger" in a few dimensions? Probably. Will this make the 992 into a big car, or less of a 911? Nope.

I like it just the way it is now. I find it more usable than my 997. Unfortunately my kids are growing a lot faster than my 911s!

I enjoy the upgraded chassis performance of the 991's, a big leap. My short drive in the new Panamera went well, cockpit layout A spec'ed out C2S $180's?

A 959 was good for 198 mph...same as a brand new 991 Turbo S (fastest 991 variant). 959 = 0-60 in 3.6s, which is a little down on the Turbo S at 3.1 w/PDK. Without PDK would be near the same again. So not sure your definition of "significantly faster" but it doesn't meet mine.

The point is we're now 30 years later, and a 959 was also rear engined, which was the comparative point being made for which I commented. I would hope after 30 years Porsche has made good on performance breakthroughs. Maybe they aren't trying so hard anymore?

Go drive a Panamera then call the 991 too big.
