The auto start/stop & coasting button's pro & cons.
I would like to hear from others what you think is the smarter choice for the auto start/stop button's use. More specifically, is it smarter to turn it off so that it doesn't stop & start so much, which could avoid an early starter replacement, or leave it on so that the PDK transmission can be allowed to disengage and coast, saving wear and tear on the even more expensive PDK?
Here in SC I've tried using it occasionally. It seems to work well with the exception of coping with the heat. It restarts the car quite often to keep the temp livable (routinely 90+ degree weather) when the car otherwise would be engine off. I too have been concerned with the stress on the battery, more so than PDK longevity.
I always do as well, not sure why you'd buy a 911 and drive it in normal mode enough to worry about these things.
I don't know what kind of driving everyone does most of the time in their cars. But I don't race to work. And my reality is the roads in my town that I drive to work on are 3 lane wide parking lots, that move along at 20 miles an hour most of the time. Very much like I35 thru Austin, or every hwy. in LA. As much as I would like to drive the car closer it to the car's limits, that is just not possible 99% of the time. Driving in Sport Plus mode is just silly when commuting to work. I bet my car cycles thru 10 to 20 start-stops per minute in traffic. That is a tremendous amount of starter-flywheel engagements, and transmission shifts. And if I head out of town on a weekend drive to Abilene & Sweetwater, that is a 3 hour trip that is a long straight shot which is also not a Sport Plus mode type drive.
Exactly. I keep it in sport or sport+ even in stop and go traffic. I do that in every car I have, even my Raptor. Normal mode in today's cars is intentionally crippled to meet emissions regulations, and there's no way the manufacturers would ship the car from the factory with those settings as standard if they had a choice.

...I don't want to drive it with the plan to trade it in after 3 to 4 years. Their current model is turbo-ed and it sounds different. In a few more years, it could be a 4 cylinder, like the Cayman. And a few more years, it could be a hybrid car, like the Panamera. I am not interested in the current & the future possibilities. So I do think about how to take care of my car. If one way is to just flip one switch, I will think about that and what happens with that selection, rather than dismiss it...

Little Gator, Its interesting. There are Porsche owners and then there are, well "faddists". They are only interested in the car as if it were faddish clothing with a designer label, only to be discarded when the latest new thing arrives (or it gets a little soiled). They only differ from the millennial types who see cars as a transportation box with the added feature of being hip/fashionable at 70 mph. Rennlist and 6Speed is rife with the type. They talk about taking care of/servicing their cars but truth be told they've never taken care of anything in their hollow little lives. Some will be insulted and say "I don't have to take care of it or be that kind of an enthusiast to enjoy this marque" And, its true, but even the extremely wealthy more often than not see the value in being good stewards of their possessions.

the wifes Bimmer has the stop start as a default. no ill effect after 5 yrs on starter. my info is that they were designed for hundreds of thousands miles of life. as far as the Porsche goes I only use it on long trips. to each his own. i hope this responce doesn’t elicit any nasty responces.
