Stock 996TT vs a stock 03 Viper? or a 'vett?

one of the guys at work has two vipers, one of which i drove around on the freeway pushing 120...

very loud, but i felt like my turbo accelerated quicker from 60 to 120...
not to mention much quieter, a more civilized ride...

just wondering. how do the two cars compare in times to 1/4, 60, and 100?

not that i'd ever be able to drive that well. i'm thinking i need to go to driving school to learn how to launch....

and incidentally, have any of you turbo owners been shamed by a really fast rice rocket?
there's this one on the road the other day with a billion stickers on it... and i was worried! i had just seen fast and the furious and the movie talks about their rice rockets that do the 1/4 in ten seconds!

looks like i'm gonna be researching the logistics of chipping my car!

I wouldn't be too worried about the rice rockets...it takes quite a bit of motor to push a Civic past much anything, let alone a 996TT. You should be worried if you see a modded last-gen Supra or RX7 though...

most of the supras are just BPU to around 400rwhp...not enough to hang with a 97 and newer turbo. Some Supras(less than 10%) have a big turbo upgrade, that can reach well over 600rwhp. Most(75%) of RX7's are stock or close to it. Not to many are over 400rwhp, and the ones that are will toast you b/c they will have in excess of 600rwhp.

Theres this old saying about supras, and their drivers...Whats the difference between a 500rwhp supra, a 600rwhp supra, and a 1000rwhp supra?

They all run 11's.

Ha... I come from a Single Turbo Supra background, and there's definitely got truth to it, at least back in the days. Nowadays, they're into the 9's with stock bottom end, stock gearbox (upgraded clutch), and stock rearends... and this is from a 6-speed!

Check out some of the vids here...

Biggest difference between Supra's and Porsche's?
Other than hp I have not seen anybody who can drive the Supra's on the track. I was on the track at Buttonwillow with the 1000hp tuner car from those two brothers on Spike Tv and they de-tuned it to around 600hp for track use. First the driver couldn't get the power down when the turbo spooled up, then he couldn't drive that well anyway, third he broke something in the car finally.
There's plenty of fast cars out there, take them to the track and see how many can use 600-700hp on the track and go faster than a GT3 or TT with less hp? Not Many.
Supra's need a lot of help on the track, no other car besides Porsche is built to go from the street to the track with so little changes, it has the brakes, power and handling.
Same thing goes for the Z06, great power, good brakes and decent handling, take it to the track and drive it at 100%, watch the driver struggle with the rear end. The suspension on the Z06 is great for the street and some track driving but at 100% forget it, they can't carry the speed in the corners like the Porsche, no comparision.

a long while back on M5board S.W. from texas challenged any porsche owner(mainly hamann7 because of his smack talking about vettes) to 20 laps head to head around TMS, no one stepped up.
SW says his vette runs laps faster then 360 challenge race cars

Since the starter of this thread mentioned chipping...

996tt Tiptronic: 1/4 mile. 12.6@114mph
(Stock)

996tt Tiptronic: 1/4 mile. 11.63@123mph
(Upsolute chip, no other mods)

I found this figure some time ago either here on 6speed or on Rennlist. I have Upsolute on my tiptronic with no other modifications and going by the seat of the pants, I think the above figures are accurate. I test drove a GT2 just before chipping my car and my car felt at least as fast as a stock GT2.

Funny thing is how many people just 'chip' the car and then so many do all the mods..I think just chipping from what I see is good for anywhere from 50-70hp and 60-80 lb/tq? Sound right.
Or you can add exhaust and cats and get 90hp and 100 lb/tq which is about the limit of the KKK16's. I wouldn't race my car at the track for 30 minute sessions this way as your at 100% of the 16's and using the stock intercoolers. But for street use has anybody ever had a problem with exhaust and chip mods only?
I think there might be too much heat soak on say a hot day at the track driving at 100% with the stock intercoolers at 1.0-1.1 bar but probably very safe on the street. Any other observations?

exactly what you said. an OLD saying. Traction issues are slowly being solved as far as the JZA80 goes.

I have a 03TT with UpSolute and GT-3 sway bars. All else stock. I track it often and have no issues at all - no overheating, no brake problems, no CELs. The weakest part of the car is now me - but I'm improving.

15 to 20 HP probably. But why not do the GIAC Stage II upgrade then? The chip will yield more improvement than the exhaust alone.
