Fuel pump current draw?

While looking over my 996tt yesterday my mechanic put a gauge around the fuel pump green wire to measure the current draw in amps. Mine reads 17amps which seems high to him and to me also the wires were noticeably warm. However he called Siemens who makes the pump and they can't say what it should draw and Porsche doesn't publish a spec on it.

The reason this came up is that he has another customer with a heavily modded car that is drawing 20amps and is in danger of melting the wires to the pump (he needs bigger valves/injectors). If anybody know what stock draw is or has a gauge to easily test this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks
