Rear CV shafts question.

Is anything special about the OEM half shafts? I may have one clicking and I checked some prices. Auto stores have them for cheap, but are they complete junk or rebuilds? I wasnt sure if the stock ones were hardened or anything special. I'm stock on power, so no need for anything stronger than factory.

Has anyone had a bad one before? Did it click like a wheel bearing?

This past summer I had one let loose at the mounting flange on the trans, and wreck my slave, accumulator and some other brackets... I was probably going about 60 mph. Horrendous noise.

Painfully I replaced with OEM for $818 (Sonnen). It was the best price I could find. Normally I would have gone ahead and done both, but that was too rich for my blood. The other one visually looked fine. I pulled those bolts and re-locktited them while I was in there.

When replacing, make sure you locktite those bolts good. To this day, I'm still not 100% sure why it happened.

I know that doesn't really address your question but I wanted to provide some feedback.

I had one go bad on my 99 C4 at 130K. it sounded like someone taping on the back fender while i was driving. Came and went with various throttle application. I figured out how to check them for wear. Jack the car up, get underneath and clamp visegrips on the axle shaft with some rags between it and the shaft so it does not chew it up. With the e- brake on try to rotate the shaft back and forth while the wheel stays still. The old one with 130K on it would rotate back and forth with the tip of the vice grip handle moving about a total of 1 to 1 1/2". I got a used set with 30K on them and there was no appreciable motion with the same test. The car felt much tighter after replacing them.
