Sluggish/Repeated Start, High Idle RPM

Hi All,

Car is 2002 996 Turbo and 100K miles.

Recently it's difficult to crank-start the car. It would take more than 10 seconds or repeated-tries to start the engine. Once the engine is started, its idle RPM is a bit higher than normal, which is like 1K rpm and above; normal is 800 RPM. Car drives normal afterwards, except higher than usual RPM constantly and no warning lights.

This happens randomly and intermittently, either engine hot or cold.

After driving a few hundred feet or a few minutes, if I try to stop-and-restart the engine, it becomes normal; no start difficulty and normal idle RPM.

Any ideas please?

Thanks!

Could be fuel pump... I had to replace mine a month ago - the issue came on intermittently until it just stopped on the highway. It had been to the dealer for a wheel bearing fix and they couldn't start it (they didn't tell me about that). It did start when they gave it back to me but it died on the highway the next day.

I hv had 3 fuel pump failures on me over the lifetime of the car, it just dies, never intermittently.
