I plugged a battery maintainer into my cigarette lighter, but it wouldn't charge. I then got a voltmeter and found that my cigarette lighter is only powered when the key is in the accessories position.

I am in Australia, maybe this is why?

 

That is strange. I simply plug mine into the lighter, plug it into the wall, make sure it is on the car mode and its a done deal. I have never heard of the problem you are encountering.

 

Sounds like yours is wired differently than mine...mine is always on.

 

Hey Stat and Speedy- if i may ask, any suggestions for brands of cigarette lighter type battery maintainers? What kind do you guys use and is one better than another? PM me if more appropriate.

I use the Porsche-O-Mat cigarette lighter charger and have been very happy with it. Set and forget. Easy to use.

 

I use the Tequipment Charge o mat bought at the dealer, it works great no problems here either except when I forget to plug it in.

 

I use the interstate one...it hooks directly to the battery terminals and has a cord that plugs in to the adapter...under the hood. Works great.
