Clay bar'd the car for the first time - WOW

I never believed that it was this "magic" paint cleaner that I'd heard about, and to tell you the truth I never thought my paint needed it. Just a good wash and wax and it looked fine to me. Man was I wrong. Finally bought a clay bar yesterday and went to work on the car today. 6hrs later and it's done - here's what I did (all by hand!):
- crappy jet self car wash
- Meguiar's Smooth Surface clay kit
- AutoGlym Ultra Deep Shine polish
- Meguiar's Cleaner Wax
- Mezerna FMJ

And the results speak for themself - it's really unbelievable. Next time I'll take a little more time with the polish and wax though. I love my car again! :D

WOW! 6 hours is a long time, but your first picture says it all. I didn't know it was a reflection until I saw the Porsche crest on the hood. Very nice!

Great job and 6 hours is worth it. You get a great work out too. Clay bar is a must on black cars.

Thanks for the tip. Always wondered whether this was real deal.

Jim, looking well slick!

Did you get that issue sorted with rear end?

jimmer23 Jan 27, 2008 11:49 AM

All by hand! Thanks for the comments guys. The surface is smooth as glass now and got rid of a lot of weird swirl marks and surface defects at the same time. It's like magic for real.

looks really clean

Steven, thanks for the email bro - meant to get back to you. Call ya tonight. Had some, um, work issues this week that my make my project a little less ambitious... :(

Nice. I initially thought the paint looked a bit mottled in places, then I figured out those spots were the reflections of clouds!

What brand of clay bar did you use?

Pierre996TT Jan 27, 2008 12:44 PM

Looks great! :)

probably a dumb question....but I thought a clay bar was for overspray. what exactly does it do to the paint?

Clay bar ia absolutely an amazing product !
It takes "fallout" ,if you will, form the enviroment that has stuck itself to the paints finish, OFF !
Leaves a finish that is soooo smooth(rags just slide right off the car). One word of advice if you do this is make sure you use enough of the lubricatiing spray so that the bar doesn't stick, thus making you let go and it drops to the ground. If it does hit the ground "Throw it out".Any sand or dirt will get embedded into it and WILL scratch the surface of your car.
BTW car looks great !
