Oil change frequency on high hp 996's

I know this is not an original question. The standard answer is if you have a high HP car....say 530 and above to the wheels then one should change the oil every 3K instead of 5 or 10K as recommended for stock TT's.

And of course hard driving (tracking, lots of 60-130 racing in mexico etc.) especially necessitates frequent changes. And of course one should change the oil after a year even if one only puts on 1K.

However, I am not running my car that hard anymore. I have pretty much done everything I wanted (Tx 28K, a couple of track sessions, street racing in Mexico and beating Paulie...the last one was the most satisfying) and at this point I really just want to put around in my car and try and get the attention of young hot women. Most of my driving is nice and easy with the very occasional third gear pull. And I only run 1.1 bars nowadays.

Can I start going 4-5K? And I am using Valvoline 20-50 blend which has a lot more protective additives than the Mobile 1.

Opinions?

I'm running Proto K24/18's and i change oil every 3k. I changed the oil every 3k when she was relatively stock as well. I see it as preventative maintenance.

jits i think youre safe by doing it every 4-5 k.

PAULIEWALNUTS Jul 7, 2008 08:14 PM

Paulie 4-5 wins,Seanarita 1 win.

I wouldn't go longer than 3k intervals.

devious996TT Jul 7, 2008 08:29 PM

while we're on this topic, what would be the time frame for each oil change if you don't hit 3k in a year?...

SXN Jul 7, 2008 08:41 PM

I say at least once a yr.

tom kerr Jul 7, 2008 08:42 PM

normal driving conditions and normal boost = normal oil interval changes 3-5k
the harder the conditions the more the oil change.
I change mine after every track weekend.
the real answer is send your oil in for an analysis and go by the results.
congradulations on your accomplishments.

Sean, 3k.....no more. Oil is cheap.

Just to add, before I built my motor I had to top off every month as I would loose a bar or two on the indicator. My car has been running since Oct 2007 and I have put down 3k~ miles and the indicator still shows full. Does this sound right? I just hope I dont have a faulty oil level indicator.

I only drive typically on weekends and very hard...what i see is that the oil level drops so quickly that I keep adding more oil...so I guess oil change isnt need as frequent as I keep refreshing it?

No way, adding oil is not the same as changing it.

Sean, while I don't have the luxury of being able to afford a high class GT2 like yourself, I do know a thing or two about high HP cars... My rule of thumb has ALWAYS been to be very anal with things like engine oil changes, diff oil changes, tranny oil changes, plug changes, etc... For example, I do 1,000 miles MAX on engine oil, sometime 500 miles especially if I've been hard on the car. I have never (knock on wood) had any major motor issues...has my over the top nature with maintenance kept them all together? No, obviously not, but I do think it's helped.

Just my 0.02

My car is like Tom's and gets a lot of track abuse... I'm pushing no more than two track weekends between changes. I do both oil and filter every other event, and I am now using Mobil1 TDT 5W40. I may change to another weight oil, in the 15W50 range if I keep tracking the car, and I also plan to bump my boost level DOWN if I continue tracking the car. I'm currently at 1.2Bar boost and I'm thinking of bumping it down to 1.0Bar.

Mike
