Big HP Kits, I'm just not getting this!!!
Why is it when Vendors release kits that they are nowhere near these numbers?
Example (and this is not just pointed at SG): SG700 kit a few posts doesn't make anywhere near 600, does the vendors numbers (product) have nothing to do with what the car makes? I thought both figures were connected as I have noticed in the past kits are close or just below the vendors product number, but nowadays the seem to be getting further apart. I know Race Gas will come into this but surely there is no way these figures will be reached. I would rather they say it's a 600 kit and it makes true 600 or is it just me, if it is it just confuses the **** out of me! |
crank horsepower not wheel horsepower, its all about marketing
|
As he said, the numbers represent crank HP, rather than wheel HP. They all do it that way. Even RUF.
|
All this are commercial names. They didn't say the whp numbers because small hp differences can occure between same car models, and then is the fact that the manufacturers work with crank hp figures, so it's easy for a customer to see the hp gain of a certain product compared with the stock numbers.

I'm working on getting what Tym at SPI is calling his SPI600 kit, but he's telling me it's going to be between 550-580 HP at the wheels...
|
I agree Crank/Wheel, but are these numbers still not far out?
|
Plain and simple, horsepower sells.
|
Just looked at that SG700 thread again, does it not say on a cooler day he would hopefully make 650 at Crank?

In general, it's nothing more then marketing....
Most of these kits are run on race gas and it's those numbers most tuners seem to post... Take away race gas and your down 80hp... |
My SG700 only made 505awhp with sunoco 104:
505 x 1.2 = 606 ?? SG700 = 606 I know of another SG700 who dynoed below 505 with 104 Mustang Dyno. |
I can understand stating crank HP since its higher than WHP but what I can't stand is boosting numbers by running race gas. It is not normal to run race gas everyday driving so the vendors should market to the most typical conditions. Quoting numbers on race gas is like then saying, after you do the XX700 kit your 60-130 will be 4.0 flat.... then in small letters it says 60-130 numbers were measured while driving the car down a hill.
Its even more funny when dyno's come out on race gas that dont make anywhere near 700 crank hp. |

Assuming your stock car would dyno at 325 awhp (which is what I usually see on a mustang), then the math is: 325/416 = 505/X X = 646 Still though, 646 crank on race gas is a far cry from 700 on pump. I bet you'd get 700 on race gas on a dynojet though. FYI, stock cars dyno at 390rwhp on a dynojet. |
